If it's crap ... We'll tell you
(Suit Up or Die Hard)
Avengers set the bar high for all superhero movies. IM3 had a lot of shoes to fill and questions to answer. I won’t spoil anything big because knowing a lot will surely ruin your viewing experience but don’t expect any Avenger in here. So I’ll just mention very small details and references.
It starts with a nostalgic “I’m Blue Da Ba Di Da Ba Die” opening. This had a “The Dark Knight Rises”-like plot. But unlike TDKR, it never went super serious and dark. And that’s why I like the Iron Man trilogy more. Stan Lee’s cameo is plain okay. There’s a “Skyfall”-like scene with Tony and the main villain. The jokes though are not that great because most of them are cheap gags even if there are few funny moments. There’s a big scene in the second act that didn’t connect to me because it never went over-the-top. The suit is damn impressive. Am I the only one who got “The Christmas Story” reference?
I won’t elaborate on how awesome Robert Downey, Jr. (Tony) is but I will say a couple of things about his character. Tony is a lot more serious here but he still has his sarcastic, witty attitude. His relationship with Jarvis is always charming. On the other side, there’s a problem in him that’s inconsistent and too much for the story. Guy Pearce (Aldrich) should’ve kept his “Lockout”-look but he did well. Ben Kingsley (The Mandarin) had a couple of bad-ass moments. Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper) will be trending because of her WTF moments. Don Cheadle (Rhodey) is underused like his War Machine. James Dale (Eric), Stephanie Szostak (Ellen), Ty Simpkins (Harley) and Jon Favreau (Hogan) did a fine job for their parts.
Iron Man 3 may not have the wit and the thrill of the first part but it’s still a fun ride with a couple of new things to see and new stories tell. Don’t wait for the disappointing after-credits clip.
