If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Well with the first year aniversery of Symbionic Titan over I decided to do a long due review/ retrospective on the show that was my favorite cartoon on Cartoon Network for eight months. Also to save you guys some reading I decided to put this into parts. So without out further adu, INITIATING SYM-BIONIC TITAN REVIEW!!!!!!!!
Part Once- Overview, episode 1, and first thoughts.
Symbionic Titan was an American animated cartoon made by Genndy Tartikovsky, the guy behind Samurai Jack and Dexter. This is mostly shown in the art style of the show, because even if he did incorperate a little anime sensibilites, it's still distinctly Tartikovsky.
Now when I first read the list of shorts being made by the then new Cartoonsitute, one caught my eye, a show named Sym-Bionic Titan. I read the title and thought "man this is going to blow....but I guess i'll give it a shot". However I couldn't dreg it up from the dephs of the Internet, but I found that it was made by one of my favorite animators Genndy Tartikovsky. Excitment mounding I then saw a commercial for the show's preimire and I couldn't wait! So I sat down, watched the first episode and it was awsome!!!!
The show starts off with Lance (a soilder sent to protect the pincess), Illana (said princess of Galliluna, the planet their from), and Octus ( a robot withs the same mission as Lance), crash land on earth in a squid (or at least organic) looking space craft. Almost as soon as they exit the craft they are met be the united states military in what is one of the most awome scense in televeision animation. They escape after discovering that the people who attacked them are huminoid like them. Any after they escape the military beings to put together what had happened pretty quickly, dedusing that Lance and Illana where aliens almost instintly. Here we are introduced to General Steel, an old tough war dog who likes to shoot first and aske questions later. He also seems to have a real distaste for aliens too. No explination is given, maybe it has something to do with the next group to show up. The G3 or the Galatic Gaurdian Group. They swoop in and take the ship our hero trio arrived in. They seem to be the main group that deals with anything extraterristial. Not only that but General Steel and the G3 leader Solomon Kane, yes like the comic book character who fights demons, seem to atleast know each other from preivous encounters and don't see eye to eye.
Meanwhile Lance, Illana, and Octus try to find a base of operations, origionally going to be a cave until they decide, by Illianas pushing, to try to fit in with the humans. Their first encounter doesn't go that well so a change of clothes and a house later (the house is paid in cash made by Ocuts and the real estate agent isn't even shocked! :D), they are all attending school at Sherman High under alliases. Lance and Illana are now the Lunas siblings and Octus goes back and foreth between either Newton, a geeky yet naivelly funny classmate, to mister Lunas. THings pick up quickly during their first day however. Lance is labled the coolest kid in school due to his snti-social behavior and 'bad boy' look. While Illana and Ocuts are hillariously labeled as nerds.
Back on their home planet of Galliluna we see that there planet is taken over by a monsterous race known as the Mutraddi and it seems that they and the Gallilunions were always enimies. Anyway the king is changed up and meets the leader of the Mutraddi, a Gallilunian by the name of Madula. A sort of mojo-jojo looking character who was apperintly a good friend of the king and his old general. It's revealed however that during an incident on the mutraddi planet Madula was supposidly left behind by the king and left to die. So he had to survive with the Mutraddi and eventually became their leader. This is never illaberated further but I would love to know exactly what happened. Mainly becuase according to the king it didn't really happen the way Madula described it.
Either way Madula finds out that the king had perfected the "rift gate" technology. It's sort of like an intergalatic teleporter portal like the Transformers space bridge. Madula also had figured out that the king had sent his daughter through it to....tell not even the king knows exactly where he sent his only child and heir. Yeah real smart, but I guess anywhere's better than a decaying empiror planet. So reather that going himself with an army of mutradi monster hoards, Madula sends an awsomely designed fire beast to earth to do the job for him.
The monster reaches Earth where Lance and Illana are. They see the monster fighting the military who, yet again have a GREAT responce time and proced to the the monster to mother fucking cum! It doesn't exactly work. Illana wants to fight the monster and help the Earthlings but Lance and Octus say no due to the fact that it would put Illana in danger. Despite this Illana runs out on them during a crowd rush and armours up with her watch into a small golden armour that has a heart in the middle of it. Illana tries to fight the monster with her head and heart lazer and manages to hear the monster but gets her ass handed to her. So Ocutus and Lance come to the rescue and without knowing it form a giant robot as a defense mechanisim and whoop the fire monster. Despite this the military attacks them and they escape still in giant robot. That's the end of episode one, I was in love, and the future episodes would not disapoint.
After the first episode Madula keeps sending in monsters with various abilities, stengths and weaknesses and titan defets them all, every time with a different weapon or a different way. However that's not even the concentration of the show. Only half of the episdoes even have titan fighting a large monster and even then the episodes are so well written and diverse it doesn't feel like a 'moster of the week' type of show. It focuses more on the characters and their development with one another and the conflict on Gallaluna, although I would have loved to have seen more of the latter. For example we see an episode of Lance's time in the Gallilunian miltary acadamy after his dad (a prominant scientist who was developing the rift gate and a good friend of the kings') "dies". Or another episode where Lance and Illana are captured by G3 and Ocutus has to save them. So the writing of the show is good compared to most action/ adventure/ sci-fi shows, and has almost to no filler episodes.
