So your first question must be…why did I do this project? In short 1) I’m an artist and I love what I do 2)
To challenge myself which is actually more of a mental challenge then physical (you
try staying interested in a single subject for a year 1/2) and 3) I LOVE Green
Lantern.
In December of 2008 I had been reading about the upcoming Blackest Night Green Lantern event, which would
be starting during the summer of 2009. I had loved reading the Sinestro Corps
war, and back then I really wanted to make every Green and Yellow Lantern but
never got around to doing the project out of sheer fear of scope. I was re
excited about the project due to the upcoming blackest night. January of 2009 was
a great start point to build every major Lantern across every colored corps
(including the black corps). I knew if I gave myself a 6-month head start that
I would have finished the majority of non-black corps lanterns by the time the
event started.
My first step was recon. I gathered every Green Lantern Comic I had and started to sketch out character
designs. The design process I enjoy a lot. It gives me a quick glimpse of what
the final product will look like before any real work is done. During this phase
I created a classification system for my action figures. The classifications
depended on body type. Class 1’s are the most abundant; these are 2 ½ inch tall
figures and are used if the character being built is of normal proportions
(height doesn’t really matter). Class 2’s are for bulky muscular characters,
they stand at 3 inches tall and slightly wider then a class 1. Class 2’s also
have cubical legs for better stability. Class 3’s are for GIANT characters that
would tower over the majority of people around them (ala Mongol) and these are
slightly larger then class 2’s. Class S’s or Class Smalls are for any figure
smaller then a class 1 (from a fly to a house cat). Class B or Class Big’s are
for Massive figures (more then 10 feet tall). Class B’s have cubical arms on
top of cubical legs. Finally Class W’s or Class Weird’s are for non-humanoid
looking figures or objects.
I then divided the first “wave” of figures into sub sections (such as females together, males together,
earth born, or friggin weird looking).
I did this so I would have clear-cut goals to reach when starting the
project. When doing a large scale art project it’s import to set small goals so
that you can reward yourself and prevent burning out.
Next I started working on making “blanks”. Blanks are the base structure that I use as a base for the
character. Each character classification was counted, and the building process
began. My figures are made from non-glossy poster board, with duct brand
masking tape and glue for adhesion. In order for my figures to move like a real
action figure I use loose leaf on moveable points for smoothness (a crude paper
Mache method). I can build one blank in about 30 minutes. The design phase of
each figure involves cut pieces of colored construction paper bonded to the
poster board and masking tape base. Most of the time the black lines you are
seeing on my figures are not drawn, it’s actually thinly cut black strips of
construction paper.
I had worked with a toy designer a couple years back who did half of the Burger King Star Wars Super
Deformed toys. Everyone wanted all of them, the set was more about the size
then any individual character. The figures were the same while being uniquely
different. They shared a body mold but all had unique things about them. It’s
safe to say that this line of toys is was what first inspired me to make these
lanterns.

This project was more about amassing an army and not any one individual lantern. I wanted the figures to be
slightly super deformed and a little anime esc. I wanted them to in particular
have somewhat bigger bobble heads and larger hands. I chose to do this so you
could easily recognize the characters face and also easily recognize the ring
on each of their hands. The first read a person has on something is usually its
silhouette. I needed the silhouettes of the figures to be very similar in order
to pull off the entire project as one thing instead of many little things.
Once I got to make the black lanterns I was heavily inspired by Kirkman’s Marvel Zombies 1 and 2 (the only 2
good ones). If you look at my use of shadowing on the faces of the black lanterns
and the creepy zombie teeth, you can see homage to Sean Phillips.

Before starting the actual design process of the figures I set up some ground rules. Rule 1 was NO
DOUBLES!. Meaning if I made a character and that character then shifted sides
to another corps that I would either not be able to make them again or I would
have to destroy the original figure. There is only 1 doubled character in the
set and that’s Deadman due to him being the sole White Lantern left t the end
of blackest night. Rule 2 NO CONSTRUCTS! I knew that if I went crazy making
constructs this project would have taken years longer. So right off the bat I
made a no construct rule, which is why none of Lafleeze’s army was made. Rule 3
If a character does have a weapon that weapon is non removable and bonded to
the hand that holds it. I knew there was going to be a lot of these figures; I
didn’t want to have to worry about small pieces floating around in a huge box
of 100 figures. Also going off the inspiration point, happy meal toys (ala the
SD star wars toys) don’t have removable objects, their usually one solid piece
that moves. Finally Rule 4 stated that every character needed a name that was
referenced in the comic. This automatically halted me from making the majority
of background canon fodder especially in the green and yellow corps.
Even though this project took me a year ½ to finish I wasn’t working on these figures consistently through
that time period. I actually worked on the figures in three different waves.
Wave 1 was January 2009, Wave 2 was July-August of 2009, and Wave 3 was
February- May of 2010. At the end of Wave 1 I had burned out and I was done
with the project. Almost every Green Lantern was made and I was happy where I
ended up, deep down in the back of my mind I never thought I would finish it.
So I went back to my normal life, I was planning my wedding and focusing on
teaching art to my students at my job. That is until the summer came. Blackest
Night started, I remember going to Mid Town Comics to pick up the free comic
book day blackest night zero issue toward the beginning of the summer. Towards
the back of that book there was pages that described every major member of
every corps in the spectrum. It seriously felt like the zero issue was saying,”
HEY here’s this road map of every character you need to make and you don’t even
have to look up characters designs in the issues!” Then I had bough the box
sets of buffy and angel to watch. Everything started to fall into place.
I have a bad compulsion where I need to multitask. I can’t just sit down and watch TV without doing something
else because I feel like I’m wasting my time. So while watching hours and hours
of buffy I started back making more lanterns. By the end of the summer I had
actually made every lantern I wanted to make that could be made (AT THAT
POINT). Originally I outlined about 25 supporting characters, such as booster
gold, wally west, and even krypto. I knew if I made the support characters that
it would occupy me until more issues came out and therefore there would be more
lanterns to make. After making the flash rebirth barry allen I stopped because
I knew that the supporting character phase was going to blow out of proportion,
and there was no telling who of the supporting characters would die and then
become a black lantern themselves (rule 1 would then prevent me from building
them again). So I totally stopped building and took a little break to wait for
more issues and tie in’s to come out. I focused more on planning my wedding,
which was coming up in November. I had a whole fresh batch of pimply teenagers
to teach art to in September AND I was starting my final semester of grad
school for my masters in art teaching.
Lots of time passed and I had again given up on finishing the project. Especially now that I knew there were
more new lanterns introduced since I finished Wave 2 then all of Wave 1 and 2
put together. Now it was 2010, I was married, I moved, I finished grad school.
Life started to become “easy” again. Then it happened…the 6th issue
of Blackest Night came out introducing the deputy lanterns. Well Holy Geek
Gasm! This was the final push I needed to finish the project. Knowing that the 3rd and
final wave was the biggest I decided to create Templates for the two most
abundant classifications (C1 and C2).
The templates sped things up EXTREMELY! I was actually pissed I didn’t think to make templates prior to this
point. In waves 1 and 2 I actually just kept re using Hal Jordan’s body as the
basis for every character, which is why you can see on Jordan that he’s
especially dirty around the edges from pen scratches during the blank
replication process.
Because of the length of this project some things changed/evolved during the building process of the figures.
One thing was that during the 1st and 2nd waves whenever
I had a character that had clothing covering their legs I would have to use a
complicated tooth pick hinge to move the clothing so that it wouldn’t halt the
characters leg movement. By Wave 3 I had abandoned this method in favor of snap
back covering. Snap back covering is a method where two pieces of construction
paper are glued together then molded into a flowing shape (as if wind was
blowing through). As the pieces dry they will actually snap back to the dried
position that they were originally molded into (kind of like when you burn a
credit card). The second thing that changed/evolved was fabrication. In the
beginning I stayed away from figures that I couldn’t get full body images of
because I didn’t want to have to fabricate something that I myself didn’t
design in the first place. As the project went on I started to care less and
less about this. The breaking point for me was making black lantern after black
lantern. The black lanterns are very drab in their coloring, so I kept looking
for reasons to add color where there wasn’t. For example, if a character had a
signature hair color I would give them that color instead of giving them a
muted grey or black. The most prominent three characters that you can see this
with are the orange on copperheads costume, animal man’s jacket, and blue being
used on black hands costume. I feel like I created a happy medium between the
comic book designs and my own.
There were many characters that I just refused to make because I thought they looked stupid such as the
majority of the guardians and jade.
I did though have a short list of characters that I wish I made but
didn’t due to either a massive lack of source images, or a lack of a name ever
being mentioned. This list included 1) Black lantern sandman, 2) Black lantern
Liara, 3) the rookie green lantern that looks like a giant lava monster, 4) the
Wolman green lantern, 5) the giant mech suit looking yellow lantern, 6) black
lantern Tomar –re, 7) Black Lantern Mirror Master 8) Many other black lanterns
from the JLA tomb.
110 figures (2 discarded from the set- Flash Rebirth Barry Allen and Stel 1.0) for a total of 108 figures/ 3
full rolls of masking tape/ 6 bottles of elmers glue/ hundreds of pages of
construction paper/ 12 sheets of poster board/ three jumbo black sharpies/ 2
exacto knives/ hundreds of work hours.
With all of that being said, here are the figures. Please enjoy; it’s a love letter to any life long Green
Lantern fan. And as Guy Gardner once said,” BEWARE MY POWER!”

Lantern figure 001
Kyle Rayner
Class 1 figure
Green lantern
1/17/09
This is the very first figure that I made. I honestly never really liked Kyle until after he lost the ion
power and he got his current costume, which I feel is way more simplified.

Lantern figure 002
Guy Gardner
Class 1 figure
Green Lantern
1/18/09
Guy is one my favorite Lanterns. I re did his face at the last minute to more closely resemble
Gleason’s artwork from Green Lantern Corps.

Lantern figure 003
Vath
Class 1 figure
Green Lantern
1/19/09
I was very happy at how well I captured the look on Vaths face.

Lantern figure 004
Natu
Class 1 figure
Green Lantern
1/21/09
Natu I believe is the smallest class 1 figure I made, she was created before I was smart enough to
make permanent templates for uniformity among the sizes. Her head is extremely
small and because of that she is one of the most proportionally correct class 1
figures in the set.

Lantern figure 005
Arisia
Class 1 figure
Green Lantern
1/23/09
I still am not quite sure why I made Arisia when I did, I must have wanted to get her out of the way knowing that the longer I waited the worst she would look. I think I redid Arisia’s
face 12 times, and I’m still not 100% happy with it (I still feel like she
looks like a transvestite). She took the longest of the previous 4 figures. You’ll also notice an annoying tooth pick hinge for her miniskirt.

Lantern figure 006
Kilowog
Class 2 figure
Green Lantern
1/24/09
Originally Kilowog’s design was based off of Ivan Reis’s drawings of him in Green Lantern Rebirth. In
Rebirth his neck is relatively small. I did 1 redesign on Kilowogs face, which
involved me removing his pupils. Over time I became infatuated with Patrick
Gleason’s artwork on Green Lantern Corps. Gleason draws Kilowog with a LARGE
neck and barely visible eyes. During the same redesign phase that Guy Gardner
went through I also made a 3rd redesign on Kilowog’s head, which
gave him a huge neck that was immovably attached to his shoulders. In the end
Kilowog turned out to look very close to Gleasons drawings of him in Green
Lantern Corps. Also I question whether or not I should have made Kilowog a
class 2 or class 3. At the time of making him I didn’t have a class 3 because
there was no one in the comic who was distinctly bigger then Kilowog. It wasn’t
until Mongol became a bigger character in Green Lantern Corps that I created a
class 3 just for him. Looking back there are only a handful of characters that
I feel were sized wrong, and one is Kilowog.

Lantern figure 007
Hal Jordan
Class 1 figure
Green Lantern
1/28/09
Hal F&*king Jordan! Hal was a good example of a figure that I was happy with immediately. Usually on a figure I make up at least 3 faces before I’m happy with the expression but for
some reason I got Hal’s face right on the first try. If I had made Hal Jordan
during Blackest night in 2010 I feel like I would have had a totally different
facial expression and hairstyle but regardless I’m happy with how he came out.

Lantern figure 008
Princess Iolande
Class 1 figure
Green Lantern
1/28/09
Princess Iolande was another example of a figure that if made today I would have made totally differently. If she was made today I feel like I would have shown more of her hair and put
the hood draped down. I redesigned Iolandes face in the same redesign phase as
Gardner and Kilowog, it involved changing her eyes and giving her more of an
angry face.

Lantern figure 009
Tomar-tu
Class 1 figure
Green Lantern
1/28/09
My favorite color is orange so I liked working on Tomar for no other reason then his coloring; the fin onhis head came out really dynamic also.

Lantern figure 010
Isomot Kol
Class 1 figure
Green Lantern
1/28/09
Isomot had a bunch of redesigns shortly after he was originally created. I redid his face, tail, and
feet at least 3 times apiece; I’m happy where he ended up though.

Lantern figure 011
Jon Stewart
Class 1 figure
Green Lantern
1/28/09
I find it funny that my students (who are 14-18 years old) think that there is only 1 green lantern,
and he’s named Jon Stewart (thank you Justice League and your racially balanced
cast of super heroes!). I like how different Stewarts symbol is in comparison
to the other lanterns. He also wins the trophy for largest hands of any class 1
figure of the set.
*6 months passes before I make another figure

Lantern figure 012
Kal-L Earth 2 Superman
Class 2 figure
Black Lantern
7/15/09
Kal-L was designed after the blackest night superman tie in Kal-L. I wanted to make him really foreboding and scary, and I think I achieved that with the eyes in relation to his mouth.
I remember the cape being especially hard to make but I would learn to get used
to it because nearly every black lantern with a cape has a similar cape to
Kal-L’s.

Lantern figure 013
The Black Hand
Class 1 figure
Black Lantern
7/15/09
Black Hand was designed mainly from the Green Lantern issue where he killed himself. I thought it was important to keep the blue in his costume intact. I wanted him to stand out
because his symbol was the symbol for his entire corps. Hand had a slight re
design on his mask involving removing the bolts that were on the “v” shaped
tiara thing, they were too overwhelming.

Lantern figure 014
Martian Manhunter
Class 1 figure
Black LanternJLA
7/16/09
Manhunter is another example of a figure that was miss sized. I feel now that he should have been a class 2 figure but he had a very complicated design and I didn’t want to waste my time
copying it again. His cloak was very difficult.

Lantern figure 015
Elongated Man
Class W figure
Black LanternJLA
7/17/09
Elongated man can actually stretch to half his size; he has a very complicated design. I’m still not 100% happy with his face, which has already had 3 redesigns (his torso had 2).

Lantern figure 016
Mongol
Class 3 figure
Yellow lantern
The goal of this project was to create every major lantern across every corps involved in Blackest night. Mongol didn’t really fall into that category being that he was dealt with/
overthrown before blackest night even began. The reason I made him was because
he has one of the coolest costume designs. I love the contrast of the purple on
the yellow. Mongol was the first created class 3 figure, which only a very few
other lanterns have.

Lantern figure 017
Arkillo
Class 2 figure
Yellow lantern
Arkillo is the negative to Kilowog, they are basically the same exact body type.yes""> By association then Arkillo was also miss sized and should
have been a class 3 figure. Originally Arkillo had his tongue necklace courtesy
of Mongol but I removed it because I felt like his character wasn’t going to
wear it for long.

Lantern figure 018
Tekik
Class 1 figure
Yellow lantern
I had a lot of fun making Tekik, much like Arkilo and Kilowog Tekik has an enemy in Green Lantern Stel (both are sentient robot characters). Tekik had many complicated parts, which
had to be minimized in order to fit on the figure. Because of the minimization
I had more freedom to create what I wanted on him. Also I couldn’t really get a
good shot of his jet pack, so I had to totally fabricate his back. The yellow
corps as a whole is very uniform; most costumes in their corps look
interchangeable except for their heads. Tekik was a good contrast to the rest
of his corps; the yellow on his body is minimal to the grey machinery.

Lantern figure 019
Slushh
Class 3 figure
Yellow lantern
Slushh is my favorite yellow lantern. Slushh is a good example of a figure that had perfect construction paper color/ contrast. The blue on green with white bordering looks amazing and
it’s really eye popping. Slushh I believe is the only yellow lantern to show no
actual yellow on his body (due to the yellow suit floating inside his acid
body/ among other things). Slushh was also the first figure that did not have
the box hands which is a staple of the entire project.

Lantern figure 020
Sinestro
Class 1 figure
Yellow lantern
Here he is the “big bad” of the yellow corps. I never liked when artists gave Sinestro the giant head. I
designed Sinestro mostly after how he looked during the Sinestro Corps war.
Originally I planned that the final figure made was going to be the white
entity Sinestro (white lantern) but I scrapped it after I made the “no doubles”
rule.

Lantern figure 021
Low
Class 2 figure
Yellow lantern
Low’s head was redesigned in the same phase as Kilowog, Gardner, and Iolande in order to make him look more like a tape worm/ dune sand slug/ empire strikes back space asteroid slug worm
thing?

Lantern figure 022
Tri-Eye
Class 1 figure
Yellow lantern

Lantern Figure 023
Maash
Class 1 figure
Yellow lantern
head.

Lantern figure 024
Karu-Sil
Class 1 figure
Yellow lantern
Karu-sil is another example of a figure where I really liked how the face/head came out. This was the first female figure I think I have ever done at this size where I really liked how
the hair came out. I also love how the upper torso of her costume resembles a
jester esc costume.

Lantern figure 025
Romat-Ru
Class 1 figure
Yellow lantern
Romat is the negative version of green lantern Tomar. I redesigned his face once, very straight forward
figure.

Lantern figure 026
Aquaman
Class 1 figure
Black LanternJLA
7/25/09
I have a love/ hate relationship with Aquaman. Originally I built this figure and hated him; I
discarded it and didn’t want to look at it. I eventually went back and re
evaluated why I didn’t like how he came out (it ended up being because of a
miss sized black lantern symbol and an overuse of fish scales). I ended up
almost redesigning everything on the figure, and he went from being my most
hated figure to one of my most loved.

Lantern figure 027
Lyssa Drak
Class 1 figure
Yellow lantern
I loved making the book of parallax on her back, beyond that she had some minor alterations in the same-redesign phase as gardner an iolande involving light reflection on her black
hair.

Lantern Figure 028
Kryb
Class W figure
Yellow lantern
them after seeing how hard it would be in relation to the small space.

Lantern Figure 029
Bedovian
Class W figure
Yellow lantern
the focus of the figure to be on the shell versus the creature that is inside
of the shell. The light brown covering on Bedovian is actually a brown garbage
bag instead of my typical construction paper.

Lantern Figure 030
Firestorm
Class 1 figure
Black Lantern JLA
7/28/09
Back in the day I was a huge firestorm fan, so I was over joyed when he showed up as a black lantern. When making this figure I was working off of early preview covers of later issues of blackest night. The only problem with this was the cover I was working on had a horizontally inverted image of firestorm. I didn’t catch it but because of that source image you’ll notice
that the symbol on firestorms chest is actually travelling in the wrong
direction. I kept it ½ as an Easter egg and ½ because I was too lazy to re do
it. I did although do a massive redesign on firestorms face during the Gardner Ioland redesign phase. The redesign involved making his face more human like and less Jack-O-Lantern
flaming head-ish.

Lantern Figure 031
Bzzd
Class S figure
Black Lantern former Green Lantern
7/29/09
Bzzd was the first class S figure made and holds the honor of being the smallest figure in the set and is the only figure with no move ability.

Lantern Figure 032
Dex Star
Class S figure
Red Lantern
7/30/09
Dex Star holds the honor of being the only figure in the set that my wife wants to steal because of
“cuteness”. I had fun making this figure but I hate how the light blue construction paper looks on the vibrant red and black.

Lantern Figure 033
Zilius Zox
Class W figure
Red Lantern
7/31/09
Zox was fun because I had a huge area to animate the emotion on his face. He looks really cool in a line with the rest of the red lanterns because of the strong circular focus of his
silhouette versus the boxy focus of the typical lantern figure.

Lantern Figure 034
Hannu
Class 3 figure
Green Lantern
8/1/09
Hannu is an interesting lost lantern that always reminded me of the rock monster thing from the never-ending story. I did a major redesign on Hannu that was almost the same exact thing I did to Kilowog. I planted his head stationary on his torso. I also simplified the cracks on his body because they were originally too overwhelming.

Lantern figure 035
Atrocitus
Class 2 figure
Red Lantern
8/2/09
I feel like I really nailed the facial expression on Atrocitus. His shoulder pads, neck guard, and gloves were a lot of fun also.

Lantern Figure 036
Shallox
Class 2 figure
Red Lantern
8/2/09
When I think of Shallox I think of two words, Canon…Fodder. Nothing special here.

Lantern Figure 037
Ratchet
Class W figure
Red Lantern
8/2/09
Ratchet was fun because of how odd of a character type he is. The tentacles actually spin using a dial that’s concealed at the top part of the body.

Lantern Figure 038
Vice
Class 2 figure
Red Lantern
8/3/09
Vice is one of my favorite characters I made mainly because of the moveable jaw on his head. He has very interesting foreboding shoulder pads, which I’m always worried, are going to
break off.

Lantern Figure 039
Veon
Class 1 figure
Red Lantern
8/4/09
Veon actually should have been a class 2 figure but when I designed him I was working off of the blackest night zero issue corps descriptions. On the red lantern corps page Veon is
proportionally smaller then he actually appeared in the comic. I may have liked
this figure more if he was bigger. If bigger I would have given the fish like
tentacle on the back of his head some dimension instead of making it
2-demensionally flat.

Lantern Figure 040
Saint Walker
Class 1 figure
Blue Lantern
8/5/09
It’s funny how Saint Walker became the Jack Bauer of the blue lantern corps (the only character that
matters). I can’t say much about
him, he was very easy to make.

Lantern Figure 041
Sister Sercy
Class 1 figure
Blue Lantern
8/5/09
I’m still not happy with Sercy even after her redesign. Originally she had orange/ red hair, which I
later removed because of it being overwhelming in relation to the other colors
of her costume.

Lantern Figure 042
Bleeze
Class 1 figure
Red Lantern
8/5/09
Bleeze’s wings are very interesting.

Lantern Figure 043
Brother Hynn
Class 1 figure
Blue Lantern
8/6/09
I made Hynn based off of the corps description pages toward the back of the 2009 free comic book day blackest night issue zero. I made him thinking he would be important, but
little did I know that he would get even less screen time then Warth did. Hynn
had a very annoying redesign involving his entire torso; there was a problem
that arose with the drapery he was holding, which had to be re done.

Lantern Figure 044
Brother Warth
Class 2 figure
Blue Lantern
8/6/09
I like how Warth came out; he was the first elephant I’ve ever made. I wish this guy would have done more during blackest night but he was barely shown.

Lantern Figure 045
B’Dg
Class S figure
Green Lantern
8/12/09
I finished B’dg in maybe 45 minutes. He actually had a redesign at one point to make his face look less drugged which involved different eyes and movement of his giant ears from the
front to the sides of the head.

Lantern Figure 046
Carol Ferris the Star Safire
Class 1 figure
Pink Lantern
8/13/09
I think Carol has one of the most drastic redesigns of any figure of the lot. Her costume is very one note. There’s almost no contrast in her costume mainly because her skin is peach,
which is very close to light pink in color. Originally I hated her, and I kept
putting off the redesign because I was scared she was going to go through the
same amount of re do’s as Green Lantern Arisia did. But luckily I got her right
on the second try. I put more emphasis on her collar and totally redesigned her
head giving her a softer more female face with more dynamic hair.

Lantern Figure 047
Fatality
Class 1 figure
Pink Lantern
8/13/09
Fatality literally looked like a transvestite when she was finished. She suffered from a lot of the same
problems that Carol Ferris had. Fatalities costume was way too plain. Her
redesign was even more drastic then Ferris’s.yes""> The only thing I kept on Fatality was her arm’s. Her new look ended up looking very close to a stereotypical gypsy.

Lantern Figure 048
Miri
Class 1 figure
Pink Lantern
8/13/09
Miri was the only pink lantern I liked prior to making Wonder Woman. It was something about the blue skin and orange hair on the pink costume. I also loved the costume homage to a
ballet dancer/ gymnast.

Lantern Figure 049
Lafleeze
Class 1 figure
Orange Lantern
8/13/09
Lafleeze stands out because of the power battery that is actually glued to his chest. I hated the costume design on him. I didn’t like how the markings on the costume looked like cave
drawings. The way I got around that was by covering up the majority of his suit
with the orange power battery.

Lantern Figure 050
Vox
Class 2 figure
Green Lantern
8/17/09
Vox was very similar to Mongol in that he actually got taken out of the fight prior to the blackest
night even happening. He was almost killed during the sciencells prison break
by red lantern Vice. Vox always interested me, and I wanted an excuse to make a
power battery. I love the weirder looking lanterns like Vox (a giant bear) and for the most part the Green Lantern corps tends to be one of the most mundane when it comes to cool looking
aliens.

Lantern Figure 051
Salaak
Class W figure
Green Lantern
8/17/09
Salaak was one of the green lanterns that I knew I had to make because it’s SALAAK! There aren’t many lanterns in the GLC that have been around a very long time, but Salaak has,
which was why I felt I needed to make him, in order to honor the character.
That and how often do I get to make someone with 4 moving arms. Salaak is a
class 1 figure but he actually has an entirely unique body template due to his
extra arms and weirdly shaped head.

Lantern Figure 052
Deadman
Class 1 figure
Black Lantern

I took a lot of liberties when creating Deadman because of him being a skeleton in a costume. Due to the thinness of the bones I knew the figure would not look good next to other
figures in the line. In order to work around the skeleton problem I gave him more of a human form. My inspiration for Deadman was actually the bad guys in Karate Kid, when they
dressed up as the skeletons and chased Daniel (seriously).

Lantern Figure 053
Terra
Class 1 figure
Black Lantern Teen Titans

Terra was an example of a character that I wanted to make but didn’t have a lot of images of. Terra’s
costume design ended up being a hybrid of two artists concepts of her as a
black lantern.

Lantern Figure 054
Hawk
Class 2 figure

Hawk I hated. I got fairly burned out from making Terra in the same day as Hawk. My laziness showed in the final figure, he ended up looking rushed. I redesigned almost his whole body
later on; He got a new face, front torso, and arms. I’m now at a point where I
don’t mind how Hawk looks but his high arched split cape is still very flimsy.

Lantern Figure 055
The Spectre
Class B figure
Black Lantern

Spectre was the first class B figure created in the set. He was actually really easy minus his hood. I hate making hoods because the process involved in their creation can be annoying and
difficult. At this point the only thing with the Spectre that I question is
whether or not he had a goatee. Some artists draw him with one but others
don’t. I can’t tell if I like his face because of this confusion. The Spectre
was the first figure of the set with worn, torn, and tattered clothing. Even
know the black lanterns are essentially zombies and have torn clothing I left
that out of nearly all of the class 1 and class 2 figures because of the danger
of the tears compromising subject matter and reconcilability. With Spectre, he
was actually big enough that I could go nuts with the smaller details. I also
kind of had to put a lot of minute details on him because he’s a fairly plain
character without the tears and stylized shadow marks.
