If it's crap ... We'll tell you

If you were to get God of War, Clash of the Titans, 300 and put them into a blender, you end up with Immortals. The film isn't rooted in any one particular story of Greek mythology, but rather a combination of many stories, but retains the Gods we all know such as Zeus and Athena. Unfortunately, the story is the weakest part of Immortals. Mickey Rourke's Character wishes to seek out the titans and use their power to defeat the Gods. It's up to Theseus, a rags to riches character formula, to lead his people against the power hungry villain and bring peace and balance to the world. You've seen this a hundred times and the story brings absolutely nothing new to the table. While I wasn't attracted to the film because of the story, it would have been nice to latch on to something with a little bit more substance.
Now we get to where the real meat of the movie is. This is, of course, the visual style of the film and how it all looks. Immortals is a beautiful film, full of stylistic and obscene executions, big set pieces and some wonderful looking special effects. Every action sequence or execution is a work of art and it's nice to see a film that doesn't hold itself down when it comes to gore and violence. Immortals isn't afraid to get dirty and exploding heads have never looked so artfully tasteful, if that's even possible. Colors pop, the sound is thick with clanking and blood squirting volume and if you have the ability to watch this on Blu Ray, it's most certainly the way to go. Director, Tarsen Singh, is a visual director and while this project of his may be self indulgent, it's slick and takes on a life of its own with the world he presents here.
Action movies today are more often than not, watered down to be PG-13 and lack the kind of unique visual artistry that is found here. While my score for the film will be significantly hurt because of the forgettable and bland story, this is something you must check out if you're craving something slick and good looking on your HDTV that will fill your appetite for violence.
