If it's crap ... We'll tell you
There has been talk of a sequel, or rather multiple sequels, to Roland Emmerich's 'Independence Day' for some time. But it seems like, within the last year, things have really begun to move forward on the project. Emmerich is writing the new movies along with his producer Dean Devlin. Currently, the sequels are titled 'ID Forever Part One' and 'ID Forever Part Two.' Up to now, it has been uncertain what the new films may look like, and more specifically what they would be about, but during a recent interview, Emmerich revealed details of the plot that may be overarching the two sequels. Here's what he had to say...
"The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back, and they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years. It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane."
What? Did we learn anything from that? Actually, what we have here is, at the very least, the justification for the delay in time between sequels. There is an inherent logical leap in releasing a sequel this long after the first film. If the aliens were going to launch a counterattack, why wouldn't they do it sooner? Now here's an explanation of the wormhole logistics to give us an idea how the aliens could actually have responded right away and still take so long to arrive on Earth. I am interested to see how Emmerich will change the look and feel of our own planet to incorporate the alien technology we will have apparently co-opted in the follow-up films. What I can't wrap my mind around is why Emmerich felt it necessary to cryptically mention the antigravity in the airplanes. Obviously it has some major bearing on the story, but he's not being real direct there. Will antigravity airplanes be the computer virus of the sequels? As in, the technology that helps us win? We'll see.
What do you guys think? Are you interested in the ID4 sequels? Can you deduce anything more or anything different from this information?
