One of the first things that happened when Disney purchased Lucasfilm last year, and announced they were putting new 'Star Wars' films into development, was that practically everyone associated with any previous 'Star Wars' property came out of the woodwork to declare in interviews that they were interested in, or at least open to, returning to the franchise. This was most likely due to the fact that it became the number one question any interviewer asked them at that point, and didn't mean anything in terms of an actual deal. However, today Latino Review is claiming to have confirmation that Harrison Ford is officially returning as Han Solo. During a televised interview, a spokesperson for the scoop-happy movie news site stated that they apparently have a legitimate source inside the studio and have "triple checked" the authenticity of this bombshell. It is not known at this time whether he will return for 'Episode VII' or one of the spin-offs. In fact, we're not even sure if it will be a cameo or a central role, though the deal is said to be substantial. As of this posting, Disney has not confirmed Ford's return.
So many huge grains of salt here. I'm always weary of Latino Review's scoops, but to their credit, I've never seen them so assured of their accuracy that they went on TV to broadcast a scoop. Granted, if they are wrong, they'll just claim the studio is "false denying." All that said, devil's advocate time, I really and truly hope that Harrison Ford is only returning to the role of Solo as a cameo. I love this character, and I am very much looking forward to a new batch of 'Star Wars' films free of the influence of a completely out-of-touch George Lucas, but the worst thing J.J. Abrams could do at this point is build in a series of winks and nods to the original series that end up being more memorable than the new storylines. Plus, as I've said before, and as much as I adore Harrison Ford, he's far too old to be an action hero anymore. That's not ageist so much as it is based on the woeful 'Crystal Skull' precedent. Hopefully he will be utilized in the same fashion as was Leonard Nimoy in Abrams' 'Star Trek.'
What do you guys think? Are you happy about the prospect of Harrison Ford returning as Han Solo? How big of a role do you think older Solo will play?

So far the only thing confirmed is that Abrams will be directing, compare that to the half dozen or so more reports presented here based on little more than rumours. How about something a little more concrete?
And like others below this doesn't really bode well IF it were true. An older Han Solo would have worked 15-20 years ago. Now however Ford really is simply too old for the role (as the photos below have attested to), and even if he is in it, it would have to be very limited. But if he were in it in a less limited capacity, it will be just like Crystal Skull all over again, where Indiana Jones was presented as an ageing buffoon partnered with a smart assed sidekick whose dialogue mainly consisted of reminding us, the audience, how old Jones was at that time. Totally needless sequel.
Comment by GodDamnRobots on February 15, 2013 at 8:09pm J.J. Abrams is the wrong guy for this. When Abrams loves something (Spielberg, Star Trek) his interpretation is constantly winking, nodding, referencing back to the old thing. It failed in Super 8, and it is the last thing Star Wars needs right now. It worked in Star Trek - but Star Trek wasn't reeling from prequels.
Star Wars needs a kick in the ass and a bright vibrant new start from a fresh perspective. I was so hopeful. But now I'm concerned it will be fan-fiction with a big budget - exactly the problem the prequels had. Damn.
I'm for this as much as im for Samuel L Jackson returning to the series only to find out that he wasnt dead, he survived the fall and is using he dark side that he had tapped before to reek revenge on the Jedi..... O and he's half cyborg since he lost his arm and took a hell of a fall. And im not for hat at all.

lookin at that photograph makes me think Han Solo should have a beard this time round... the less of Harrison Fords face visible at this point the better. Plus, Star Wars needs beards... lots of beards.
Comment by Tom on February 15, 2013 at 5:58pm And all this time, I thought it would be a new story with all new characters. Disney sucks.
Comment by MahMahAfro on February 15, 2013 at 5:58pm As long as they do a good job of it I'd love to see the return of Solo in however big or small a capacity as fits the movie. I'm confident Ford has what it takes to bring some wrinkled charm back to the role, the real key will be the script and how authentic and convincing it's depiction of an aged Han Solo will turn out - I hope it's more substantial than just trotting out the old fossil for nostalgias sake.
