If it's crap ... We'll tell you
The ultimate dream for any working actor has to be landing a role in a major geek property movie. Or maybe more accurately, the major prize is being able to stake a claim in multiple geek property movies. Sir Ian McKellen did this with 'X-Men' and 'Lord of the Rings,' Harrison Ford did it with 'Star Wars' and Indiana Jones, and more recently J.J. Abrams managed the feat with both 'Star Wars' and 'Star Trek.' Now it looks like one of Abrams' 'Star Trek' stars is similarly dividing and conquering. Zoe Saldana, who plays Uhura in Abrams' Trek universe, is in final negotiations to next board James Gunn's 'Guardians of the Galaxy.' She will be playing female lead Gamora, a skilled alien assassin who is also the last of her race. 'Guardians' is set to be released August 1st, 2014.
Well, maybe I'll agree with every other casting decision Gunn makes. I thought Chris Pratt was an inspired choice for Star-Lord, one that demonstrated a bold, nonconformist vision for the project. But then, seemingly against all better judgement, they went and gave the role of Drax the Destroyer to former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista. Fortunately, I do think Saldana is an apt selection for Gamora. I don't profess to be an expert on the source material, but covering the continuing news on the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movie has lead me to research these characters again and again. Saldana is a talented actress and has also shown, in films like 'Colombiana,' that she can hold her own in physically-demanding roles; not to mention ably play female assassins. Besides, she's already gone totally blue for 'Avatar,' why not give her the green treatment for Gamora. At this point, the role I'm now most concerned with is Rocket Raccoon. That character has the potential to be pretty damn fantastic if the right voice talent is hired. I'm just going to say this one more time: H. Jon Benjamin.
What do you guys think? Is Zoe Saldana a good fit for Gamora? What's your assessment of this team so far?
