'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Begins Searching For Its Star-Lord

Even though The Avengers and their return to solo movie projects dominates the landscape of Marvel news at the moment, we mustn't forget about James Gunn's 'Guardians of the Galaxy.' Though it may have been a rather unlikely choice for filmic adaptation, Marvel is surging ahead with 'Guardians.' The shortlist of actors in the running for 'Guardians' leader Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord) has just been released. It looks like the top contenders, at least the ones actually testing for the role, are Joel Edgerton ('Warrior'), Jack Huston ('Boardwalk Empire'), Jim Sturgess ('Cloud Atlas'), Lee Pace ('Lincoln'), and Eddie Redmayne ('Les Miserables'). There may even be a few more, but this is the list as we know it so far. 'Guardians of the Galaxy'is due in theaters August 1st, 2014.

Truth be told, there are probably two dozen more actors vying for the role, but the fact that Marvel is actually testing this lot speaks to the studio's heightened interest in them. I must say I am disappointed that Nathan Fillion is not in the running. I know my desire to see him in the role was originally somewhat of a gag predicated upon the fact that both 'Guardians' director Gunn and Marvel overlord Joss Whedon had both worked with him in the past, but the more I hear about Star-Lord, the more I think Fillion would have been perfect. That said, looking at this group, the one I think I would most support is Jack Huston. He may not have the established name as does Joel Edgerton, but his performance ability is unquestioned. His character on 'Boardwalk Empire'is by far my favorite to have come along in any of its seasons; so dark and complicated. That said, it'll still be interesting to see which names are added to the Star-Lord pool as this progresses.

What do you guys think? Do you like any of these gents for the role? Who would you cast?

I love Fillion, but I think he would be better as Ant-Man. Plus, an Edgar Wright movie staring Nathan Fillion would be awesome. As for Star-Lord, I think Lee Pace would be perfect.

I love Fillion as much as the next fan, but he's completely wrong for Star Lord. I'm just going to put that out there. Sarcastic + space doesnt always = Fillion. Peter Quill is a fairly developed archetype of his own and Fillion just isn't quite the right fit for it. I think people just reeeeeally want Fillion to be in a superhero film. Green Lantern? Fillion. Ant Man? Fillion. I think we can all just relax a bit and come to grips with Capt Mal maybe never being a superhero. In fact, I think I would kind of like to keep it that way. It would be like if Harrison Ford went out and played Superman after being Han Solo.

I have nothing but undying LOVE for the Uncharted games. I know Nathan Drake was largely based on Nathan Fillion, but that still hasn't made me like him. In fact, nothing has yet opened my eyes as to why everyone loves Fillion so much. He's just a guy, a guy who always plays.... just a guy. He's just made good career choices, especially with Joss Whedon (but those projects speak more to Whedon's credit than Fillion's). I even remember Carlyle being asked a question once (maybe it was on Spill, maybe it was elsewhere on the internet. I forgot.) that went along the lines of: "Which actor or actress today do you think is most loved for no good reason?" Carlyle answered: "Nathan Fillion. He has barely any range but people can't help but like him."

It can't be Fillion? Then Lee Pace. He's the best guy for it right now, out of those guys they're looking at.

The only one I liked was Nathan Fillion. Korey you said it best,"I think Fillion would have been perfect." By the way, why isnt he in the running does ANYONE know???? Furthermore, Jim Sturgess is my second pick.

While Nathan Fillion would make an excellent Star Lord, it may be a little too obvious. Still I'd rather see him in the role.

Huh, I just started reading the Thanos Imperative. This bit of news came right when I got acquainted with the character.
