'Escape From New York' Reboot On The Way

If nothing else, it was made in the 80s, so you knew it wouldn't be long until somebody rebooted and/or remade 'Escape from New York.'  Well you can break out the eye-patches and cobra tattoos, because it looks like Joel Silver is making that happen. Teaming with Studio Canal, the prominent producer is putting together not just one remake/reboot, but instead an entire trilogy. The first film in the series would be an origin story for the iconic badass Snake Plissken. In John Carpenter's original 'Escape from New York,' which took place in a post-apocalyptic future, Kurt Russell played soldier-turned-criminal Pliskken as he was forced to enter a maximum security prison colony built on what used to be the island of Manhattan. He is tasked with rescuing the President of the United States, played by Donald Pleasence, from the sinister Duke (Isaac Hayes). A remake had been attempted not so long ago over at New Line, but that fell through and the studio allowed the option to lapse two years ago.

I will admit that it is going to be very difficult for me to look at this objectively. 'Escape from New York,' is one of my favorite movies of all time. Heck, some of you know me on this site as Steak Plissken. However, trying to put my fandom aside, ask yourself if there is any necessity for a Snake Plissken origin story. They haven't just announced a remake, which would be borderline incendiary on its own in my opinion, but instead a trilogy ignited by a backstory. Does anyone watch 'Escape from New York' and think, "man, I like this movie but we're really missing something not knowing how he lost his eye?" Do we really need all the mysteries of great film charters mapped out and explained to us? I feel like I'm making the same arguments now that I made when 'Prometheus' was being planned; not every unanswered question needs a resolution long after the fact. Besides, Snake Plissken and Kurt Russell are inextricable. Casting a younger version of Snake is going to be an uphill battle to say the least. And on top of all of this, remember the last time we returned to Plissken's world? 'Escape from L.A.?' I love 'Escape from New York,' and John Carpenter is a hero of mine, but 'L.A.' was atrocious. I think we're more than sated in the Snake Plissken department.

What do you guys think? Would you watch a trilogy of new 'Escape from New York' movies? Is there a demand for a Snake Plissken origin story?

This is one of my all time favorite movies as well, in fact i only watched both Escape from New York and LA only 2 weeks ago for old time sake through LoveFilm. although Escape from LA was not as good as New York i still enjoyed it. As for a remake, well let's just say i am staring to get a bit bored with studios not coming up with their own original ideas. I mean they have just released the remake of Red Dawn, my wife and kids have been and seen it but i refused, point blank as the original was a classic 80's movie to me i have also point blank refused to go and see the Evil Dead reboot as again the original is a classic which should never have been touched.. The only reason i went and watched the Total Recall remake was because it was different from the original which for me worked well.

It is starting to show that Hollywood is running out of ideas or maybe they are just scared of investing in new projects thinking that going down the reboot road is a safer route, preying on film fans love of the original classics to get bums on seats and money in pockets. At the end of the day who knows? maybe a reboot of these two movies will do the original justice, fingers crossed they do, but as for a prequel, a back story for Snake, although i don't think there is such a need, maybe, just maybe it will do Snake some justice. The biggest question would be, who should play him, personally, Collin Farrell after his stint in Total Recall or maybe Guy Pearce who i think pulled off the anti-hero gig in Lockout.

I like how "reboot" means "remake" now.

A Remake is nothing to write home about. But a TRILOGY!  Come on that is a bit much.

FUCK NO!

WHY NOT REMAKE CRAPPY MOVIES (THAT HAD POTENTIAL OF BEING GOOD) AND MAKE THEM GOOD?! LIKE BAY'S TRANSFORMERS, SHYAMALAN'S LAST AIRBENDER, DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION, ETC.
