Formerly called 'The Apocalypse,' Seth Rogen and 'Superbad's Evan Goldberg are writing and directing a cataclysmic comedy now dubbed 'The End of the World.' The film is based on a short Rogen and Jay Baruchel made years ago called, not-so-enigmatically, 'Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse' in which the two play themselves in an apartment as the world ends outside. Already aboard their gargantuan cast for the feature version are Rogen and Baruchel, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, and Aziz Ansari. It's also recently been reported that Jason Segel and David Krumholtz ('Numbers') will cameo as themselves in the film. With all these comedians crammed into one movie, it seems only natural to add...Hermione Granger into the mix...right? Well it now appears that indeed Emma Watson (The 'Harry Potter' franchise) will make a cameo in the film as well. She will also be playing herself. No word yet on when shooting is to begin.
There are things that really interest me about this project and things that concern me about it. On the one hand, I'm a big fan of apocalyptic fiction and we don't see too many comedies about it. I also like the idea of these guys all playing themselves in so much as it's also been stated that not all of them are going to make it out alive; lending a note of realism to the apocalyptic theme. So yes, conceptually I'm on board. I'm also a big Harry Potter fan and I was consistently impressed with Watson's performance as Hermione Granger, so it'll be nice to see her showcase her talents in other genres. However, I'm concerned that since all the actors are playing themselves, that her cameo will be little more than her being subjected to a volley "I always wanted to do Hermione" jokes. I'm not trying to judge the film for things it hasn't done yet, but it is a concern I have. I guess I'm just saying that I hope they're able to utilize her brief time on screen for more than just "wow, you're the girl from Harry Potter" gags.
What do you guys think? Does the inclusion of Watson enhance your interest in 'End of the World?'
