If it's crap ... We'll tell you
A month ago Disney shut down LucasArts, much to the despair of fans everywhere. The two games that were currently in development at the publisher, Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault, were cancelled. Many people worried that this meant the future of Star Wars games relied on Disney Interactive, who doesn't have the best track record regarding quality games. However today Disney announced and exclusive deal with EA. Giving EA the rights to publish and develop any further Star Wars games that are not for mobile, social, tablet, or online only. Disney co-president John Pleasents has released the following statement regarding this matter.
This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the Star Wars franchise for years to come. Collaborating with one of the world’s premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to our fans around the world.
EA Labels President Frank Gibeau also released a statement.
Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe. Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.
There are two ways people will react to this. 1: "FUCK! EA is going is ruin Star Wars just like they ruin everything!" 2: "Oh cool! At least we know for sure more Star Wars games are getting made." I happen to fall in the latter category. While EA does not have a stellar track record with their games, they do have the ability to produce good ones. Plus now we know for sure that Bioware will be making another Star Wars game. They may have lost some fan appreciation with TOR (The Old Republic), but this may be a sign that you may see KOTOR 3 (Knights of the Old Republic) sometime in the future. Not to mention that with the quality and look of engines DICE makes, we will be seeing some very amazing looking games set in the Star Wars universe soon. Regarding 1313, EA is not stupid. They saw how well fans reacted to the original footage shown of 1313, and would be silly not to at least attempt to resurrect it. For right now though all we have is conjecture and theory, but I'm sure next year we will begin to see some of these new games come to fruition.
