If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Well, it looks like we really will be getting a sequel to 'Dumb and Dumber.' No. Matter. What. Earlier this year, it was reported the followup to the Farrelly Brothers' 1994 comedy was going to begin shooting next month. Then, however, it became uncertain as to whether or not the film would be happening at all. This uncertainty was augmented when Jim Carrey departed the project. Undaunted, costar Jeff Daniels insisted that the project was still moving forward. Now, Bobby Farrelly revealed the proposed plot in an interview. Here's what we can expect...
"I can tell you that there is no growth out of either one of them and it's 20 years later. What is funny about the original is that they're grown men who are complete losers and when the studio came to us about a sequel, we were like, 'Loads of kids are losers and they're dumb.' We didn't see any value in the sequel so we backed out of it, but now these guys are in regular life and they're still basically children at heart. The story revolves around the fact that one of them may have sired a child. They want to go and find the child because he's having a kidney problem and he wants to ask him for one of his kidneys."
This sequel has proven harder to kill than a T-1000. So one of them is going to have a kid? That seems like pretty standard sequel fare. The long-lost family member in need of a kidney has only really been done in 200 or so television shows and Hallmark Channel movies so that'll be...fun. I'm going to play devil's advocate for a moment. Let's say I'm a huge fan of 'Dumb and Dumber' and I can't wait to see a sequel. How could I possibly be on board if half the central dimwitted duo is absent? All the other reasons to abandon this project notwithstanding, it will not work without Carrey. The number one goal of the filmmakers at this point must be getting him back. Otherwise, this really is a doomed venture.
Am I wrong? Anyone want to make a case for the sequel sans Carrey? Who would you cast to replace him? What do you think of the plot?
