Dreamworks in pre-production on their upcoming animated film 'Turbo.' The film centers on a garden snail who dreams of achieving glory in the world of racing. His aspirations, as one would expect, cause a great deal of friction with his slow-moving brethren. One day he is endowed with super speed and winds up competeing in the Indianapolis 500. David Soren ('Merry Madagascar') is set to direct as well as co-write the script with Robert Siegel ('The Wrestler') and Darren Lemke ('Jack the Giant Killer'). The big news here however is that 'Turbo' has locked in a gargantuan cast of voice talent that currently includes Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena ('Tower Heist'), Luis Guzmán ('Journey 2'), Bill Hader ('Superbad'), Richard Jenkins ('Step Brothers'), Ken Jeong ('The Hangover'), Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph ('Bridesmaids'), Ben Schwartz ('Parks and Rec'), Kurtwood Smith ('Robocop'), and Snoop Dogg. 'Turbo' is currently set for a July 19th, 2013 release.
Holy crap, that's a lot of people. It's one thing to have a few celebrities to voice your characters, it's qite another to boast a substantial chunk of the Screen Actors Guild. This is probably the biggest cast of voice talent I've seen since 2009's 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.' Of course, none of this matters at all if the writers and director aren't able to reign in all of these actors and effectively balance their screen time. In that regard I'll again reference 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,' which I feel was one of the best non-Pixar animated films of the last ten years. 'Cloudy' was able to make adept use of each and every member of its star-studded cast from James Caan to Mr. T. I'm interested in the concept for 'Turbo' even though it eerily reminds me of the racing snail from 'The Neverending Story.' Not that it's eerie because their stories are so similar, it's just that any reminder of that movie conjures up nightmares from my youth.
Are you interested in 'Turbo?' What do you guys think of this collected cast? Is there anyone else you feel they are missing?

Comment by Happy Birthday Roboto on February 25, 2012 at 11:55am Not a single name here makes me want to watch this film, a lot of other people still seem to love Dreamworks and Pixar, but they lost their appeal to me a while back... sorry!
It's possible the snail from The Neverending Story inspired this character!
Comment by dave on February 25, 2012 at 8:48am Sorry to everyone but I have to make this joke. Why did the snail put a big "S" on his automobile? So he can have "S-car Go." Hah ha ha ha.........ok that was lame.
Personally I like dreamworks due mainly for the voice acting. Movies like Shrek, Kung Fu Panda owe a lot to the big name actors that play the characters. Shrek (orginal) is probably the one of the best Mike Meyers movies out their next to Austin Powers and Kung Fu Panda is one of the only Jack Black movies I really enjoy.
Also anything with Samuel L. Jackson and Paul Giamatti has to be good.
Comment by Richard Dempsey on February 24, 2012 at 9:09pm Wouldn't it be weird that every actor in Hollywood who wasn't in this movie DIED and this is all we had left to use. Just imagine the Oscars:
And the winner for best Supporting Actor is....
SNOOP DOG!
Comment by DickVanSwype on February 24, 2012 at 9:00pm So it's Ratatouille. Instead of a rat it's a snail, and instead of working in a kitchen it's doing something that involves high speed. Where is the originality? -_-
Comment by Ash on February 24, 2012 at 8:43pm dreamworks philosophy has always been to load every big name actor then can into their films rather then actually create a good story.
Comment by KP Spark on February 24, 2012 at 7:03pm Its missing Stalone, Schwartznegger, and Chuck Norris.
Comment by Mr. DeViouS on February 24, 2012 at 6:29pm they're just looking for something to subliminally advertise "Cars 3"
