If it's crap ... We'll tell you
That's right, boys and girls, they really are remaking 'Point Break.' Kathryn Bigelow directed the 1991 original film starring Keanu Reeves as a cop who goes undercover as a surfer to try and identify a team of armed robbers. Alcon Entertainment has just announced that they have hired a director for the updated version. Ericson Cove, the cinematographer who made his directorial debut with 'Invincible,' has landed the gig. The new film will take place within the world of extreme sports and, again, center on an FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring. The screenplay was put together by Kurt Wimmer ('Law Abiding Citizen') and shooting is set to begin by the end of the year. No word yet on what actors may be in he running for the leads.
It's the go-to reaction to hate on remakes of 80s films. Many times this has more to do with our rose-colored memories of the decade than with the individual film's viability for re-imagining. There are plenty of 80s movies that would benefit from a remake, and then there are those that have already been remade under a different name. There has already been a 'Point Break' remake, it was called 'The Fast and the Furious.' Swap surfing for street racing and it's basically the same damn film. FBI agent goes undercover in the world of, yup, an extreme sport to identify a group of thieves. He becomes friends with the guy who is ultimately the perpetrator, even though our agent was convinced it was a different crew and makes a wrongful arrest based on that hunch. Then, wouldn't you know it, he can't bring himself to arrest his new amigo even though he is fully aware that friend is a criminal. For crying out loud, there are even awkward dialogue exchanges in both films centering on tuna fish sandwiches. The point here is that remaking 'Point Break' at this point would just be redundant. As to Cove as director, 'Invincible' was fine, but is he really going to be able to top Kathryn Bigelow?
What do you guys think? Do you think there is any new material to be mined from 'Point Break?' Who would you have hired to direct?
