If it's crap ... We'll tell you
The James Bond franchise has existed for half a century with six actors having played the iconic spy up to now. Outside of Australian vs. Welsh, or Irish vs. Scottish, there hasn't been a great deal of diversity within this group of actors. If rumors are to believed, there may be a major change on the horizon. 'Skyfall' co-star Naomie Harris let slip while promoting the film that Idris Elba ('Thor,' 'Luther') met with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli supposedly about his potentially taking on the role in the future. Here's what she said...
"I didn't realize that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idris [Elba] and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli [James Bond producer] and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond. And I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he's a great guy."
Hell yes! I can't tell you how excited I am at the prospect of Idris Elba playing James Bond. He's poised and dashing as Bond should be, and has already proven he is a talented performer as well as someone who can handle large-scale action sequences. However, now is the prime time for Elba to take over the Bond mantle and yet Craig still has at least two more movies on his contract after 'Skyfall.' There has been much made of the fact that "Craig can't play Bond forever;" this empty observation being the rallying cry for casting a new actor. Thing is, Elba is only four years younger than Craig, so it's really not a matter of age. The fact that Elba is black matters so little to me, my only real sticking point with Bond is that he's not played by an American. The proposed casting of Elba might also give the filmmakers the opportunity to approach James Bond as a position within MI-6 and not one singular person. This would lend new context to the entire franchise and acknowledge the fact that the character has not aged in five decades.
What do you guys think? Would Elba make a good Bond? Do you think he will immediately follow Craig?
