Confirmed: Jay-Z Scoring Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby'
So remember that first full trailer for Baz Luhrmann's 'Great Gatsby?' Remember how strange it was that a movie based on a novel written, and set, in the 1920s began with Jay-Z/Kanye's "No Church in the Wild?" Well it looks like that wasn't simply a piece of attention-grabbing marketing. It has just been confirmed that Jay-Z will in fact be scoring the film along with a group called The Bullitts. 'The Great Gatsby' is now slated for release in May of next year. There were evidently rumors floating around that this was the case, but The Bullitts provided confirmation via their Twitter account.
"Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!"
I have no idea who The Bullitts are (is?), but Jay-Z is one of my all time favorite rap artists. I'm interested in the idea of him actually scoring a film as opposed to his songs simply being re-purposed for anachronistic stylistic flair; as is Luhrmann's usual wont. When I first saw the trailer that began with "No Church," I was reminded of how much Luhrmann's musical choices often bug me. As if beholden to some bizarre MTV sensibility, he has a tendency to wedge Top 40 music into his films regardless of the era in which the plot is based. This is what tends to give his films a music video tinge that completely frustrates me. I don't need to hear "Lovefool" in a freaking adaptation of 'Romeo and Juliet.' But beyond all of this, wasn't 'Gatsby' originally supposed to be released this month? Sure it got pushed, but how far behind were they if they are just now confirming who will be scoring the movie? Will Jay-Z and Bullitts be able to finish on time? You can't rush HOVA! Also, there is already someone, Craig Armstrong, credited with crafting the original score for the movie so how will Jay-Z be worked in?
What do you guys think? Is Jay-Z a good choice to score this movie? Do you typically enjoy or dislike Luhrman's musical choices?

It's a shame Jay lost out on scoring American Gangster because I thought he was perfect for it. However it's the jazz era and it's the American Dream and whose story chimes more closely with the spirit of that dream than Hov? I'm looking forward to it.

I am interested on how this will be all pulled together. Jay-Z always wants to succeed in every project he is apart of, or so it seems, I just hope the movie is good. I want it to epic.

The Great Gatsby is my favorite book of all time. It's beautifully written, and I don't think it can really be translated into film. ESPECIALLY not by Luhrman. I enjoyed Moulin Rogue!, but I'm sorry, Gatsby is not even kind of the same story. His movies are always about a love story (done very stylized), while The Great Gatsby is all about the American dream, and those things don't gel. Luhrman is going to gut the depth of Gatsby and Daisy's story, and I dread it. At this point, I don't even care how "dope" Jay-Z's soundtrack is.
