If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Last week, actor Frank Grillo stoked the fires of internet rumor when he posted a cryptic tweet about visiting "Marvel" in L.A. He further fanned the flames by tagging the tweet #CaptainAmerica, closing that it would "be cool if it works out." This intriguing bit of social networking was compounded by comments made by talk radio host Matthew Aaron, which implied that Grillo was quite close to landing the role of Crossbones, an assassin from the Captain America comics universe. Now it seems the rumor has been confirmed, and that Grillo will indeed be playing Crossbones in Joe and Anthony Russo's 'Captain America: The Winter Solider.' Crossbones is a mercenary ass-kicker at one time employed by The Red Skull. Grillo has appeared in films such as 'The Grey,' 'Warrior,' and the upcoming 'Gangster Squad.'
I know very little about Crossbones; big shock I know. However, I really love characters in superhero universes that have no superpowers. I like the idea of villains and allies bereft of fantastical abilities standing toe-to-toe with their super counterparts. I also really like the design of Crossbones from the images I've seen and I'm curious to see how the big screen version retains or alters his visual components. Grillo is a very blue-collar type of actor. You aren't going to get a lot of frills in his performances, but they are always quite genuine. He's well-built physically, though he still seems a little small for the role based on the pics I've seen of the character, but then that's what people said about Tom Hardy as Bane. The interesting thing about Crossbones' inclusion in 'Winter Soldier' is not so much what he might do now, but instead where his story may lead in terms of Marvel's enormous cinematic world. After all, was it not Crossbones who pulled off the assassination of Cap in the comics?
What do you guys think? Happy Crossbones will appear in 'The Winter Soldier?' How might he be used and where might this story take us knowing he's on board?
