Fans of NBC's 'Community' are probably well-acquainted with the tension that frequently cropped up behind the scenes. This tension usually boiled down to the temperamental Chevy Chase, who plays the curmudgeonly Pierce Hawthorne, and his constant issues with show creator Dan Harmon. Chase made no secret of his distaste for the writing and jokes; often storming off set or just flat out refusing to take part in certain gags. When 'Community' was scheduled to return to the airwaves, sans Mark Harmon, many wondered if these problems had been solved. However it appears Chase's dissatisfaction with 'Community' could not be quelled by Harmon's departure. It has been announced that, effective immediately, Chase will also be exiting. This was said to be a mutual agreement between the actor and the show's executives. 'Community's fourth season is mostly shot, with only one or two episodes to go, though when these completed episodes will air seems to keep changing. As it stands, season four arrives February 7th.

That sound you're hearing is not one person on this planet being surprised by this news. Chase's relationship with Harmon, his open, bilious frustration with the show and with his character, and his constant temper tantrums instantly slapped a ticking clock on his run on the show. I gotta say I did let myself believe that Harmon's firing, after leaving that not-so-tactful angry voicemail on Chase's phone, might calm things down a bit. And indeed, they were able to get Chase to do the majority of the fourth season. But it's not as if I ever fooled myself into thinking that everything was copacetic now, I mean we are still talking about Chase's ego, right? He was so great in the 80s, in all those classic comedies that made him a legend, but even as a 'Community' fan I can't say I'm going to miss him. His character was always such a drag for me and I don't think they're going to have a hard time filling that spot at the study table. Is it too much to hope that another 80s legend might step in? Did someone say Dan Aykroyd?

What do you guys think? Are you upset Chase is leaving? Do you think he means it this time? Who might you chose as a replacement for Pierce?

Bill Murray, just so they can startup the SNL feud one more time.

You know what? I loved the show but I never was much on Pierce as a character. I don't hate him but the show gets into his episodes, they were not that funny much akin to Uncle Ruckus in The Boondocks but as for Chevy, I heard of his bitching and moaning about the show and it's not like people were clamoring to him before and now he's quitting the one thing that actually making him more revelant. Technically that was my way of saying fuck Chevy Chase. The End.

Having Dan Aykroyd on COmmunity sounds epic...

Everyone knows Chevy Chase is an asshole. Always was, always will be. He did great stuff in the 80s, but his time is OVER.

I liked Pierce as a character.  There was something kind of sad about him and he seemed redeemable.  I do feel he could be written poorly though, such as some of the episodes where he became a full on villain.  I ended up liking him more than Ken Jeong though.  Chang just became psychotic and undid any positive aspects his character might have once had such as delivering Shirley's baby.  He did not even show up all that much anymore and just seemed to be phoning it in.  I liked Community when it became a quirky and referential show because it was the only thing setting it apart from every other generic sitcom.  That is why I dread the next season as I doubt it will be the same show anymore.  Between Chase's temperament, and Jeong leaving all the time to play racist caricatures, changes to aspects of the show I liked were inevitable.

He's hardly ever in the show anyway.  If I hadn't read this I don't think I would have ever known he quit.  With Harmon gone I also thought Chase would calm down.  Maybe they should have let Chase go instead of Harmon in the first place.

I honestly dont think it matters. This is my favorite show but season 4 will most likely be it's last :(

I gotta wonder why did Chase even took the gig to begin with. If he's had a problem with many of the gags on the show why sign on ? Were the initial scripts to his liking ? Also I wonder if he ever taught this show would have been something good for his career, I mean he's introducing himself to a brand new audience that may not have seen any of his sketches on SNL or the Lampoon movies. Still I would find it hilarious if they decide to put Leonard in his role, take out the cranky grandpa and put in the one that seems like fun.
