If it's crap ... We'll tell you
New Line's upcoming sequel to 'National Lampoon's Vacation' may have just caught a big break. The new film is set to star Ed Helms ('The Hangover') as the grownup version of Rusty Griswold. Rusty is now attempting to take his own family on vacation, with whacky hijinks no doubt ensuing. Last week, it was announced that Christina Applegate ('Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy') was also joining the cast as Rusty's wife, a strong-willed woman losing interest in their marriage. Ever since this project was conceived, the question on everyone's mind was whether Chevy Chase and/or Beverly D'Angelo would be reprising their roles as the original Griswold parents. Now it appears both are in early talks to do exactly that. At this point, their appearances in the film are said to be on a cameo level. The new 'Vacation' is set to go into production this spring.
Finally some good news for this sequel, though marginal at best. One of my biggest concerns with this film is that Chase and D'Angelo would not be appearing as the progenitor Griswolds. The last time a 'Vacation' sequel was made without so much as a cameo by Chase and D'Angelo, it was the direct-to-video garbage dump that was 'Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure.' It seemed silly that New Line wouldn't be able to get at least one of these two to appear in the new 'Vacation' considering they were both willing to reprise the roles in a recent Old Navy commercial. I just wish they could find a way to work in these two characters in more than just a cameo capacity, as that would be about the only thing that could foster my interest in this project. Now we need only worry that Chase's famous temper might have him walking off this set before the movie is released.
What do you guys think? Happy Chase and D'Angelo are coming back? Is a cameo enough for you or do you wish they were more central characters?
