Horror remakes, for better or worse, will always interest us. So when we heard
Kimberly Peirce ('Boys Don't Cry') would be revamping
Brian De Palma's 1976 horror classic
'Carrie,' our curiosity was piqued. The first order of business was casting an actress to take over the titular role
Sissy Spacek had made so iconic; that task falling to
Chloe Moretz ('Kick-Ass'). Then of course there was the matter of casting Carrie's psycho-religious mother, played originally by
Piper Laurie. The rumor was that
Julianne Moore was in the hunt for the part, and now it seems that rumor has been confirmed. In addition to confirming Moore, the studio has also announced that
Gabriella Wilde ('The Three Musketeers') has joined the cast as
Sue Snell. In the original film,
Amy Irving played Snell, the popular girl who took pity on poor Carrie while all the other kids seemed content to torture her.
As I mentioned previously, I recognize that Moore is a tremendous actress, but I'm still not quite sure about her ability to play this part. Margaret White is a terrifying woman with not a hint of glamor or allure. Hopefully, with the right makeup they can harden Moore's features so we aren't distracted by her beauty. Maybe I just have a thing for Julianne Moore, I don't know, it's hard to say. As to Gabriella Wilde, she is obviously very pretty, but hasn't had much acting experience. That's not to say she won't be able to pull this off, in fact it's kind of fitting in a way. Brian De Palma had some unknown kids in his 'Carrie' as well. One in particular was some dope named John Travolta; a full year before 'Saturday Night Fever' made him a big deal. So I'm not exactly dreading this based on the casting so far.
What do you guys think? Can Moore handle a part this sinister? Are you wild about the other bit of casting news today? Will these puns ever stop?
