Last week, DC announced that they were going to be adapting their underwhelming Metal Men property into a film with Barry Sonnenfeld directing. Not to be outdone in the realm of who-gives-a-crap obscurity, Marvel has just announced their intention to develop The Human Fly for the screen. Oh, you haven't heard of The Human Fly? That character that only lasted nineteen issues over two years in the late 70s? Yeah, me neither. He was a villain who, after being shot by police and left for dead, wandered into a lab and was endowed with the physical characteristics of a fly. He first tangled with Spider-Man, but also had run-ins with Daredevil. He was later relaunched as a superhero with a completely different backstory. The film will purportedly be produced as an indie with Steven Goldmann ('Trailer Park of Terror') directing from a screenplay by Tony Babinski.

So yeah, you can all stop clamoring for that Human Fly movie now, it's happening. Once again, I had to do some research to find out who the hell this character was. What I find interesting is that The Human Fly existed as both a villain and, later, a hero. So which avenue will the film pursue? I'm more interested in villains as a rule, but his villainous origins sound like a bad cribbing of the 1950s 'The Fly' films. Also, without bringing Spider-Man into the mix, which I can guarantee you will not happen with an indie film about a forgotten Marvel character, what would be the point? But I suppose if you're hellbent on making a Human Fly movie, pointlessness does not bother you. At least we're in good hands with the director of 'Trailer Park of Terror,' right? Oof.

What do you guys think? Anyone care one way or the other about a Human Fly movie? Why do you think the comic book companies are becoming so interested in obscure characters lately?

DC and Marvel are going through a midlife crisis. They want to make so many movies.

Cyrus did you write that headline? Be honest...

By the way, Blade was a bad ass to the people who read Tomb of Dracula and his solo back up stories and 90s comics, before he became a movie character. Human Fly was never bad ass status. He was an attempt to in on the Evel Knievel popularity of the 1970s (when this comic was released) and was the result of a commercial deal between the real Human Fly's management and Marvel. Marvel was probably too cheap to spring for Evel Kneivel rights. The comic only lasted as long as it did because most comics back then stuck around for at least a year. And some kids bought bad comics because there was no cable, no internet, and comics were cheap... That meant all comics had some nerds as a captive audience.

The Human Fly pictured above is not a villain. He is an Evel Knievel rip off, and based on an actual stuntman/daredevil who did Evel type stunts in the 70s. The comic was more famous than he was. (And that ain't saying much...at all). I have had most of the HF comics for a few years now. I can't get through them, it's so bad. I still haven't read most of them. I try once in a while,..but I can't. So bad. I did research on this comic book and the actual Human Fly for my "bad comics" video series.

If Marvel makes this movie...idk what to say. I advise against it. It sucks that anyone would waste time with that when there are many great comic book properties that could be made into movies. Between this and the news about the Ant Man movie that is definitely being made (by the  guy who did Kick Ass) and Guardians of the Galaxy, I'd say Marvel is in danger of watering down their superhero movie properties. If these movies get made the public, including fanboys, will definitely tire of superhero movies and they will all become unpopular. And I never thought I'd say that. Because I never thought Hollywood would be THAT dumb.

Personally, i find villains only work in the context that they define the heroes. Films like Wanted hold very little interest to me.

The idea of the villain's and their possible redemption DOES hold some interest to me. I read an old issue of this comic years ago...I think it was the retconned version, as he seemed more a stunt-man with gadgets and elaborate Mission Impossible style plans to stop the bad guys. Maybe instead of the powers route, they should go for the skills version?

Personally I'm just "ehh" about the whole thing. As stated above it's a very obscure Marvel character, so I don't think anyone will be butt-hurt if the movie is a piece of crap. Then again, if the people behind it can take the Human Fly and do something original and interesting (like the first "Blade" movie) then more power to them. However it Iooks like this movie will probably lean more towards the SciFi/SyFy "Man Thing" movie.

I hope Jeff Goldblum's in the lead!

So wait? Is this DC developing it or MARVEL??? I know the character is a Marvel property, but why mention DC?
