So a new Batman show based off the comic where Batman teams up with a new hero every episode to go on an adventure and stop some villain. Very kid-targeted. Very Adam West-esque. Very cool.
I'm going to tell you all right now bitching about this show for not being "dark" enough is fucking dumb. Its obviously a kids show. And you know what? When Batman first appeared in Detective comics waaaay back who do you think was buying those? Mostly kids. Just because someone adapted the property to be more mature and appeal to an older audience doesn't mean that's the only way it can be interpreted.
Oh? No Gotham? No Alfred, or Commissioner Gordon? Well that kinda goes with the premise. This is Batmans swashbuckling adventures with various other cool heroes in exotic locales.
With that out of the way, heres my review of the first episode "Rise of the Blue Beetle".
Only one episode in and I'm excited to see where this series goes. We get the new Blue Beetle teamed up with Batman for a standard enough story. Its got plenty of humorous moments and some sweet style. I don't see anything here that disrespects Batman. Hes still out kicking ass and being the hero with his brain, muscles, and gadgets. The show started with brief team up with Green Arrow sans beard, rocking the boxing glove arrow. He and Batman escape a ridiculous death trap devised by the Clock King and then take him out. This segues pretty well with the main part of the episode and I wonder if they plan on doing a similar structure every episode. It could get old but hey, that remains to be seen. The rest of the episode follows the rise and fall of Blue Beetles ego as he and Batman help liberate an alien race that resemble one celled creatures from the terrors of Kanjar-Ro. I had never heard of this villain and while he wasn't too interesting in his motive or plan he was appropriately menacing and had a good connection to Blue Beetles past. The show is full of humor including a recurring joke that the aliens consider Batman to be Blue Beetles sidekick. The animation is very pop art style and is reminiscent of the Venture Bros. It moves pretty fluidly and the colors are all rich. Some people have complained about the light use of CG in some parts but I found it to be a very minor annoyance as the simple geometry and colors of the show let the CG blend pretty well. Much better than it has in previous DC cartoons. Diedrich Bader does a fitting Batman for the show. A couple times he sounds a little awkward but I think he will get better as the series goes on as voice actors often do. The music in the show is ok. I wish it had a bit more energy to it but its serviceable.
I'm excited to see how it settles in and how the different characters will be portrayed. They did Blue Beetle decently though I would have preferred him to actually sound Hispanic. Paul Dini is supposed to write an episode featuring either Bat-mite or Zatanna. Also the Green Lantern Guy Gardner is going to be in an episode written by DeMatteis, a veteran of the character. Heres a list of heroes that are supposed to be appearing on the show for those interested.
Adam Strange, Aquaman, The Atom, Bat-Mite, Black Canary, Blue Beetle, Booster Gold & Skeets, Deadman, The Demon, Doctor Fate, Fire, Firestorm, The Flash, Green Arrow, Green Lanterns Guy Gardner & Hal Jordan, Huntress, Jonah Hex, Wildcat, Kamandi, Katana, Metamorpho, Plastic Man, Red Tornado, Robin
And some of the dastardly mustache twirling villains
Black Manta, Bronze Tiger, Calendar Man, Cavalier, Clock King, Despero, Felix Faust, Gentleman Ghost, Gorilla Grodd, Kanjar Ro, Kite Man, Ocean Master, Sportsmaster, Zebra-Man,
From the premise you should know if you're interested or not.
Just because it isn't how you prefer Batman doesn't make it shit. After all Adam West was Batman too.
To all the naysayers I only ask
Why so serious?
... I mean this is a guy who dresses up like a bat afterall.... and theres no fun in that?
