Watchmen star Jackie Earle Haley has signed on to play Freddy Krueger in New Line's forthcoming Nightmare on Elm Street reboot, EW has learned. The actor, who received an Oscar nomination for his role as a sex offender in 2006's Little Children, will take on the part famously originated by Robert Englund when cameras roll on the franchise's ninth film, titled A Nightmare on Elm Street, on May 5 in Chicago.

I for one find this to be good news. After playing a rough and tumble ragamuffinn ne'er do well, a pervie child molester, and a viscous sociopathic crime-fighter that was as much a danger to civilization as the criminals he tortured and murdered, I think Haley has shown enough range to bring a real pathos and charm to the role of Krueger... If they take this down a serious horror route, they may be able to make some magic... well, as close to magic as murdering children in their sleep can be...
