If it's crap ... We'll tell you
As should be obvious to anyone with access to the internet, casting rumors are part and parcel with superhero movies; with all high-profile movies really, but even moreso with superhero cinema. Usually these rumors involve who is said to be "in talks" with the directors and the studios, but today's casting rumor is slightly more interesting. A couple of weeks ago, 'Avengers 2' director Joss Whedon let slip in an interview that he was adding "a brother-sister act" from the comics into the superhero team-up sequel. Beyond much doubt, he was referring to Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch. Now who to play the two? If recent reports are to be believed, as Whedon finishes the script, his "prototype" for Scarlet Witch is actress Saoirse Ronan ('Hanna') That's not to say she has auditioned for the role, but Whedon is looking for a Ronan-type for the hex-wielding superheroine.
This reminds me of a story from the FX animated series 'Archer,' which for the love of Burt Reynolds, you should be watching if you aren't already. When they were looking for a voice actor to play Mallory Archer, the creators put out a casting call stating that they were looking for a "Jessica Walter type." Walter played Lucille Bluth on 'Arrested Development.' When Walter heard this, she asked to audition, given that she was in fact Jessica Walter. She ended up landing the role, and she absolutely nails it week after week. I only bring this up because I don't quite understand the practice of productions using prototypes based on performers who are still working and already suit the role on their own. In other words, why doesn't Marvel just seek out Ronan? I think she'd be a great Scarlet Witch, and it would be entirely counterproductive to take this long end-around to her eventual casting.
What do you guys think? Would Saorise Ronan make a good Scarlet Witch? Do you think Marvel would actually use an actress prototype and then not cast that same actress?
