Archie's Final Project (My Suicide)

"My name is Archibald Holden Buster Williams and I'm going to kill myself!"

The tagline is clear as the main subject of the movie. For a school project Archie a loner cinema afficionado of a film class, an aspiring director, has declared that his final assessment will consist in killing himself on camera. At the moment he left those words escape his mouth, the strange kid became the main topic of school. His parents, a bunch of shrink, psychologists and advisers, the police, the most popular chick of high school, new friends, or just the lost souls met in the hallways, will all become the characters of his last documentary. The dark twisted mind of Archie, full of dark humour, is questioned by all those new interactions, his last masterpiece takes shape and love seems around the corner.

David Lee Miller's "self-inflicted comedy" is one of those gems I like to watch to tone down the rythm of my life. It reminds me to take care of the people around me even though they don't seem in need of my help. Here is one of the best indie movie of 2011. No advertising, no noise, no one has talked of this pellicula magnifica. A silent limited release but a must see for an independent mind. The film is artsy in many ways but never pretentious.

My suicide is also the occasion to remember the late David Carradine a.k.a Vargas the death's poet. Irony of life when we know how he left this earth O_O! Nora Dunn, Joe Mantegna, Mariel Hemingway as a brilliant supporting cast are three crazy suns. They light up the screen everytime they show up.

Here, Gabriel Sunday portrays the suicidal Archibald and Brooke Nevin is his hot new friend: Sierra. Visualy the movie is a graphic adventure with a lot of creative animations. Sometime I've got the feeling "Youth in Revolt" (The little shitty Michael Cera flix) have badly stolen most of its ideas in this movie. The numericam shots of his everyday life mixed with animated parts are not just there to show how trendy the movie is. They serve the fucked-up mind of the main character and introduce a lot of film references and so did the music. And the dialogue are so good ... I almost know the introducing monologue by heart

Now, why would you want to see a movie about suicide? It's depressing, I know! My friends ask me this one everytime. And the only thing I can say is don't be afraid. The subject is depressing, not the movie. It's sombre, it's sad sometimes but there's a point to this dark comedy. It shows the teenage life just like a non glamorized CW TV show. We all go through this permanent confusion when we're young and in need of a reason to live for. C'est la vie! And there's a payoff at the end of this journey that gives me ... hum ...no.... I don't gonna spoil it. Enjoy it by yourself.

I'm an Archie. And you?

P.S: To those who already have seen AFP, did you ever try to list ALL the film references? IMO, that's mission impossible!
