3D Animated Popeye Movie On The Way?
In the realm of cartoon sailors metamorphosed into strongmen by canned greens, Popeye is arguably the best. Sony Pictures Animation also apparently sees the worth in this nautical, pipe-chewing firecracker as they are preparing a new feature for the eighty-three-year-old comic strip/cartoon character. David Ronn and Jay Scherick have been hired to write the script for the new film, which will purportedly be in 3D. Genndy Tartakovsky ('Hotel Transylvania') has been brought on to both develop and direct the new Popeye movie. No word yet on a release date.
I'm a big fan of Genndy Tartakovsky. I absolutely loved 'Samurai Jack' as well as 'Dexter's Laboratory' and I'm glad he's getting feature film opportunities. That said, I don't have a great deal of affinity for the Popeye character. I remember seeing the cartoons rerun on late night TV, and I'm well aware of the pop culture mainstay he became, but he never did anything for me. And while I admire Robert Altman's 1980 attempt to make a Popeye movie with Robin Williams, but I feel it was largely a failure. I'm hoping Tartakovsky can find away to keep the character relevant and that the writers can deliver a script that isn't wholly beholden to the 3D gimmick, which feels doubly unnecessary in this instance. However, Sony's 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' made wonderful use of 3D so that at least curbs my doubts a bit. I only hope this project in no way delays the long-awaited 'Samurai Jack' movie.
What do you guys think? Could Tartakovsky pull this one off? Do we need a new Popeye movie? Does the 3D concern you?

I wonder how kids these days will receive Popeye. I loved the character, watched his adventures religiously on TV as a kid. You can't find it on TV now...it's too violent (forget that he was fighting for good) and he smokes a pipe! I"m looking forward to it. Anything has to be better than Robin William's Popey...that was a depressing look at the character, even Harry Nilsson's music couldn't win me over.

I love Popeye but news of a presumably CG animated movie raises a red flag. How many hoodies will he be wearing? Several?
That said, Genndy Tartatovsky is no hack, so who knows. I'd love for this to work, I adore the Fleischer Popeyes.

Genndy Tartakovsky, creator of one of my all time favorite cartoons as a child, brought in to put together one of the best old-school cartoons ever to the big screen.

I'm only interesting in this movie IF it's base on the oryginal comic strips by Segar... who have nothing to do with the cartoon. In fact the humor was pretty dark andi t was far from a kid friendly material while the story and the characters where rich and complex.
I would honestly love to see a movie by a filmmaker who would ignor the animated shorts and base the movie on the comics but sadly we all know it's not going to happend... :(
