My Review of Captain Phillips: http://www.ryanhawbecker.com/2013/10/captain-phillips-movie-review.html?spref=tw …
Just caught this last night, I'm with Korey and Leon, absolutely loved it. While Gravity is still may my favorite film of the year so far, this ranks very close. This is what a realistic dramatic thriller should be, not that shit that Zero Dark Thirty was. Never a dull moment with this movie, ever since the pirates showed up, it was tense from there on in. HIGH Full Price!
one of the best films of the year....by far the best thriller of 2013...
Captain Philips review: Tom Ranks makes his comeback in Paul Greengrass' drama based on a 2009 true piracy story in true epic fashion in which Hanks plays Richard Phillips and details his hostage crisis by Somalian Pirates.
Rich Philips is a Captain living in Vermont with his nurse wife, Andrea (Catherine Keener in a very brief role) and two grown kids. All is okay with the Captain and is scheduled to be commanding the Maersk Alabama to Mombasa, Kenya, and with a new crew to make matters difficult for our hero. Meanwhile, a man named Adawauli Muse (Barkhad Abdi, a real gauntly looking actor) is taking a crew of 4 (actors I never heard or saw off, but are broken into categories of "muscle", "brain", "driver", and "kid") to hijack the Freighter and what else get money. Fates collide and the two are in a struggle to out maneuver the other, as Muse and Philips have a battle of wits. With the outcome being on of them will eithers submit or unfortunately die in this film.
The film is jam packed with enough tension to make you feel nervous for either man, as Hanks' character/or the real Captain is vulnerable and not John Rambo. He's an everyman in every sense and really feel he may not get outta this alive esp with him and the "Fishermen" in the small yellow life boat after exiting the Freighter in the 2nd act of the film. As for Muse, he's relatable but does not condone his actions or pardon him, and it does not paint all pirates as monsters. The script by Billy Ray ()who wrote Breach and Shattered Glass, both bio-dramas which I heavily recommend) does good with the scenes with the crew and the direction by Greengrass is hand held, holds your attention and the look of the film is grade A. This may be Hanks' Oscar contender and no he does not rescue Wilson from Cast Away sadly. I will say the film wanted me to question the morale's and was of the USNavy or Coast Guard when a situation like this is handled in the film. It's cruel but it's a necessary evil.
Other actors include Corey Johnson, Max Martini, David Warshofsky, Yul Vazquez and Michael Chernus. I'll give Captain Philips a FULL PRICE. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sp6jpeDeQmE
Co-Host!!! Why is everything that's coming out of your speaker box on this review, is you TRYING to be funny? No real input! LOL! J/K man Love you guys!
I watched the movie and loved it...but a part of me feels the second act (as Cyrus mentions) might be too long (pretty much half the movie), kind of like Man of Steel.
Can't wait to watch the movie. I really hope it is good. I will listen to the review after so I don't have any direct influence on my opinions (not that I doubt you guys are wrong, but I want to come back and agree to thing than go in expecting certain things).
