Raimi Not Interested In Directing 'Oz The Great And Powerful' Sequel

It's been a Sam Raimi sequel news day. First we find out that a sequel is being planned for the remake of his 'Evil Dead,' and now it seems there has been an update to the previously announced sequel to his 'Oz The Great and Powerful.' The recent Disney film followed the exploits of the young wizard Oz (played by James Franco) as he arrived in the land that bore his name and became the ruler of the Emerald City. Just last week it was revealed that screenwriter Mitchell Kapner had been tasked with putting together a screenplay for a second installment. The question of course then became whether Raimi would be retuning to direct. It appears we now have our answer. Raimi indicated in a recent interview that he is not interested in directing the sequel. Here's what he said...

"I haven’t planned on directing the sequel. I did leave some loose ends for another director if they want to make the picture. I tried to make it a complete ending, so that the audience would be fulfilled, but I also let Evenora and Theodora get away. I was attracted to this story but I don’t think the second one would have the thing I would need to get me interested."

I thoroughly enjoyed 'Oz The Great and Powerful.' I thought it did a wonderful job of subtly working references to the 1939 film into its narrative and, though a bit heavy on the CG, reminding us all of the wonder in the world of Oz. I can't fully understand why Raimi wouldn't want to return, it's not as if he's shied away from being a franchise helmer in the past, but it can only benefit the followup movie if the director whose heart is not in it gracefully steps down. There were a few distinctly Raimi shots in 'Oz The Great and Powerful,' but there is nothing about its success so inextricable from his style that another talented filmmaker couldn't do something unique with it. However, we do need to keep our eyes on casting reports from here on out as you never know which among the actors may only be interested in reprising their roles with Raimi in the director's chair. My guess however? James Franco will be back regardless.

What do you guys think? Disappointed Raimi is not likely to return? Who would you select as his replacement?

It is a wonderful prequal. There is no need to make a sequel, it's just find by itself.

I'm okay with it.  Another director, a different take, what is needed still is a solid script/story/acting/direction/etc.  Just as long as a short list of directores aren't involved, such as Michael Bay or Uwe Boll, you can get a great Oz sequel.

Oh yeah because god forbid Hollywood make a stand alone movie, nowadays movies don't mean shit if there not a trilogy. Fuck Hollywood

Maybe after he writes the script for Evil Dead 4, he'll be back , just give him until September

After Spider-Man, he probably doesn't want another big tentpole franchise. I can't blame him. Still gotta see this one.

I can't imagine another director doing it better. I think Raimi really shows that he's the true champ of this style and not Burton who just gets lost in his visuals. Raimi delivered the visuals but also a charming story filled with colorful characters. I don't really even see how Raimi left any room for a sequel. It felt pretty complete except you are left wondering why he gave Rachel Weisz's witch so much attention when she's barely in the 1939 version. Dorothy's house crushes her off screen after all. Otherwise it felt like it bleeds right into the original. With Raimi out, I feel like I might be too. They'd have to really pull a big trick out of their hats to make a sequel work.

As sad as this is, he just recently stated that he wants to go back and focus on doing a direct sequel to, wait for it... ARMY OF DARKNESS! If they keep the same tone (and the Army of Darkness title) I don't think modern audiences will get the film confused at all with the new Evil Dead remake. I wish he would return for another OZ movie, but if this does get him to make Army of Darkness 2, (but ONLY if Bruce Campbell returns as badass Ash) then HELLS YEAH! :D
