The name of the game for every studio is, and for a while has been, franchises. No matter the property, if there is any additional money to be made, they will find a way to sequelize. One firm believer in this principle is producer Jason Blum, who not only presides over the soon-to-be five-installment 'Paranormal Activity' franchise, but will also see the release of 'Insidious 2' latter this year. Now it appears Blum has also gotten the green light to produce a sequel to 2012's 'Sinister.' Directed by Scott Derrickson, and co-written by Spill's very own Carlyle (alias C. Robert Cargill), the first film centered on a true crime author who, in order to inspire his writing, moves into the house where a family was murdered; what he discovers there is more horrifying than anyone could have imagined. Both Derrickson and Cargill are returning to write the script, but Derrickson has decided to step down from the director's chair. 'Sinister' made $87 million on a $3 million budget. As of now, no release date for the sequel has been mentioned.
Sort of a mixed bag of a news story. Obviously, I'm excited for Cargill, and I'm interested to see what he and Derrickson come up with as far as a story continuation. However, it's disappointing that a fantastic horror film like 'Sinister,' which is so beautifully self-contained, must now be stretched in order to facilitate a sequel; something that has spelled doom for plenty of preceding titles. Then again, the story progression could evolve naturally with a new person finding that box of 8mm films. I'll say no more for fear of spoiling. I have heard that Derrickson's decision to abdicate the director's chair is a result of his desire to place an up-and-coming horror filmmaker at the helm of a major studio movie. That's pretty awesome, and I gotta tip my hat to the guys for that. Now it becomes a question of when Cargill and Derrickson will find the time to write 'Sinister 2' while also putting together the script for the 'Deus Ex' adaptation.
What do you guys think? Are you excited for a 'Sinister' sequel? Who might you chose to direct it?

Comment by Jeremy on March 7, 2013 at 2:07pm I was being a bit sarcastic, i dont actually have any venom for Cargill.
But I do think Sinister as a movie was a stand alone story.
Hollwood going back for more is all about money.

Sinister was a great horror film, but the ending was definitely lack luster and a little bit of a let down. There were points in the film where you actually wonder if the main character was just psychologically fucking himself from all the writing he's done or if this was really happening. That in itself was disturbing.
For the ending, I would have rather seen the family just move from the house with a final shot of the 8mm film on the floor. Endings don't always need a thorough explanation...sometimes the more you leave to the audience's imagination, the better.
Comment by Chad Posey on March 6, 2013 at 8:11pm Making it as a success anything doesn't classify you as a sellout you stupid fuck.
Comment by F4effort on March 6, 2013 at 5:10pm Jeremy, are you being sarcastic? Hope you are...
Comment by kwame digital on March 6, 2013 at 12:30pm I rly hope they don't do that thing that sequels to scary movies do where they over-explain what the monster is.
Comment by Jeremy on March 6, 2013 at 12:11pm Why didnt Cargill tell the LEOG that a sequel was coming?
I wonder how he feels about being a hollywood sell out.
I guess it pays the bills....
Comment by Jesus Jones on March 6, 2013 at 9:50am Later*, We really have no idea if either writer had any ideas or secret plans for a sequel in the first place.

Comment by Luck702 on March 6, 2013 at 12:04am Can't wait, loved the first. Funny how this gets announced after Carlyle was on Leog and said nobody's run anything by him about a sequel.
