Shooting is already under way for Marc Webb's 'Amazing Spider-Man 2,' but that doesn't mean a few more names can't be added to the cast roster. As if Electro (Jamie Foxx) and The Rhino (Paul Giamatti) were not enough of a challenge, now Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) must also contend with Norman Osborn. Osborn of course is the villainous head of Oscorp Industries who moonlighted as the sinister Green Goblin. The character was played in Sam Raimi's filmic Spidey universe by Willem Dafoe. Now it appears Chris Cooper ('American Beauty') has signed on to take over the role for the 'Amazing Spider-Man' sequel. At this time, it is not known if Cooper's Osborn will make the transition to Green Goblin in this particular sequel. 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' is due in theaters May 2, 2014.
Cooper is an excellent choice for Osborn. He's so good at playing villains that his Tex Richman from 'The Muppets' was just as much a caricature of himself as it was of movie bad guys in general. It was inevitable that we would be getting a new Norman Osborn. As great as Dafoe was in the role, Sony/Colombia has made it more than apparent that they are looking for a clean break from Raimi's universe, hence their giving us the second Spider-Man origin story in ten years. However, I would implore the screenwriters to exercise caution as to how Norman is utilized. He should absolutely not become the Green Goblin in this film, or at least not until the very end as a bridge to the next film. One of the key problems with 'Spider-Man 3,' as with many superhero movies like it, is that it didn't know how to balance all of its villains. You had Venom, Sandman, and the Harry Osborn Green Goblin all jockeying for prominence within the story. Three villains in one movie this early in the new franchise is entirely too many. Osborn should be the guy pulling the strings in the background, but if he actually dons the mask and hops on the glider, 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' is going to be every bit as woefully crowded and unwieldy as 'Spider-Man 3.'
What do you guys think? Happy that Cooper is playing Osborn? Should the actual Green Goblin factor heavily into this sequel?

Comment by Mike Salcedo on March 4, 2013 at 1:30pm @Fungusmonkey With the direction the new Spider-Man films are going, I think the Rhino will be a biological experiment rather than a guy in a suit. I haven't played the ASM game, but its story was approved by Sony and it unified all the villains under an OSCORP umbrella as cross-species experiments. In that case, Giamatti probably won't need to bulk up because he'll just turn into an raging CGI monster. That lack of diversity in villain origins could get really old really fast. Maybe that's why we're getting Venom and Electro as well; because Rhino is just more of the same (Another OSCORP experiment).
Comment by Boatloads1017 on March 3, 2013 at 9:34pm @Fungusmonkey It'll be interesting to see how they want to do it, though I have a feeling they want to do what Zemeckis did with Ray Winstone as Beowulf.

@Boatloads - Actually, I think Giamatti might be able to pull it off if he gets into a little bit of shape. They typically draw Rhino now a days as this giant super muscled behemoth, but originally the character was just a big dumb Russian mobster. There's always been a bit of comedic tragedy to the character, and I think that Giamatti has the ability to bring across both the "almost likeable" and "intense fury" aspects of the character. Physically I think he needs to bulk up a bit for the human part, but the suit will likely be CG or at least CG enhanced. More like this:
Comment by Boatloads1017 on March 2, 2013 at 12:00pm While I didn't like Amazing Spider-Man, I do approve of this casting. I can definitely see Cooper as corporate villain type.
@Fungusmonkey If physicality is an issue, then I'm guessing you're not gelling with Giamatti as the Rhino.

Comment by Sektos on March 1, 2013 at 10:01am Im also hoping for MONSTER-Goblin- Skipping powerranger or goofy halloween look with purple shorts and singlet :P Considering they are setting up the genetics side in both ASM 1 and game, im hedging my bets on Monster-Goblin (with addition of glider and gadgets but- Cartoon Ultimate Goblin had glider and lighting glove)
Comment by Sektos on March 1, 2013 at 9:57am @ Mysterio - It seems pretty likely that Norman is definitely not going be a "hero" considering the backstory with him and Parker Parents & Connors, and Im glad thats going be the case.
Norman in many versions (I havent read the original run) starts off as morally grey-to-black before he becomes Goblin, which just makes him 'crazy' / 'pyschotic'. In the Spider-man animated, Spectacular cartoon, Ultimate cartoon & comics he began as far more of a sinister, greedy character who constantly belittled his son whilst trying to get power one way or another.
Plus considering they'd want to differentiate themselves from Raimi's version of characters, they pretty much set him up in ASM 1 as this, and in ASM 2 he will be introduced along with Harry (plus some dad issues likely), and be manipulating things behind the scene
Comment by The Chaz on March 1, 2013 at 9:40am @Fungusmonkey:You think they may skip Norman as Green Goblin all together, and just go straight to Harry getting hold of the serum?
Comment by Gift of the Magi on March 1, 2013 at 9:20am @Fungusbunny: Oh gods NOT the Ultimate Green Gobbo-Hulk. Sorry, but the Ultimates universe is better as an experimental test-bed for alternate story ideas, NOT for feature films. Nothing in that universe I consider canon or even relavent...it's mostly a mental masturbation line for writers that wished THEY created these characters instead of more talented people 60+ years ago.
