Han Solo & Boba Fett Movies On The Way?
When it rains, it pours. That expression can sometimes be applied to the internet rumor mill, and it certainly seems apt today. Just yesterday, a rumor hit that Disney/Lucasfilm would be making Yoda the subject of its first spin-off film. These would be standalone movies centering on characters from the original 'Star Wars' trilogy but that would exist in a chronology separate from the new trilogy. Today, two more major bombs have been dropped in this regard that, if true, are monumental for the entirety of the franchise. According to Entertainment Weekly, Disney is in the process of developing a Han Solo movie as well as a film centering on bounty hunter Boba Fett. The Solo solo movie would take place between 'Revenge of the Sith' and 'A New Hope' and investigate the smuggler's origins. The Fett film would take place either between 'A New Hope' and 'The Empire Strikes Back' or between 'Empire' and 'Return of the Jedi,' and have Boba anchoring a story about several intergalactic baddies. EW claims to have a source close to the project who confirmed this is the direction the standalones are taking, but did admit that these films are still very early in the process. Disney/Lucasfilm declined comment.
Holy crap! I'm really trying not to get my hopes up here as this is unconfirmed and may end up struck down before morning. However, it is interesting that there has not been a denial to any of the standalone movie rumors of the last couple of days. That is in no way a smoking gun for their credibility, but the speed with which false rumors of this kind have been shot down in the past does make one wonder why the Yoda, Solo, and Fett movies would not have been similarly denied were they actually false. All that said, and our requisite grain of salt consumed, how amazing would it be if we actually got these two films? Since day one of Disney announcing the spin-off movies, the one I've wanted to see more than anything was the 'Bounty Hunters of Mos Eisley'...which is the title I always envisioned. The Fett movie sounds like it would be pretty damn close to my dream. There has been talk of Joe Johnston ('Captain America') possibly directing this, as it was he who designed the original Fett armor and he did express interest in the gig, and that is completely copacetic by me.
As to the Han Solo movie, I'm excited at the prospect, but it is far more contingent on finding just the right people. I mean, we're talking about recasting one of cinema's most iconic characters here. I am hesitant to even voice a possible choice for actor to replace Harrison Ford...or even a director for that matter. The movie can't be overly gritty, because though Solo was a smuggler who was ensconced in the criminal world, he also had a lot of wry wit and charm. Tarantino might be an option, given his propensity for creating charming, likable antiheroes, but even then I'm not sure he's the right guy.
What do you guys think? If these spin-offs were to occur, would you be interested? Who would you cast as Solo? Would would you get to direct either or both?

I've been saying for the longest time that a great idea would be a Han Solo TV SHOW. I'll settle for a movie though.

I'm worried they'll soften up Boba Fett cause everybody likes him. Can't he be a bad guy? Bad guys are cooler... I don't want to see him as an anti-hero with a heart of gold.
Also they should look at Rian Johnson to write/direct a Solo movie. He invents slang for every movie, so he could devise something for smugglers - AND he has something of a Spielberg vibe.

Niether of these movies excite me, both these characters do well inside bigger stories. Imagine if Jack Sparrow had his own solo movie. That being said Vince Vaughn would make a great director for either along with Edgar Wright, and Bradley Cooper would make a great Han Solo.

Tarantino? you're kidding right? no way disney would ever hand their property over too him, much less opt for the R rating he's sure to push for. I'd love to see it though.

@Tom, I agree. Just leave Solo alone. Fett, on the other hand, would be pretty awesome.
OR maybe be semi-original and come up with new protagonists?
