Kenneth Branagh To Direct 'Cinderella'
Earlier this month, Disney's revisionist take on Cinderella lost its director. Mark Romanek ('Never Let Me Go') departed the project, apparently due to a difference of opinion on the film's tone; Romanek evidently wanting to venture into darker territory than Disney was comfortable. Now, it appears Kenneth Branagh ('Thor') is the prince being courted to take Romanek's place at the ball. Branagh is in negotiations to take over directing duties on 'Cinderella,' which currently has Cate Blanchett attached to star as the wicked stepmother. Branagh will see his cinematic pass at the Tom Clancy character 'Jack Ryan' released this year. If Disney is able to make the deal with Branagh, it is thought the production will still begin this summer as planned. 'Cinderella' is set for a 2014 release.
When Romanek left 'Cinderella,' it sapped much of the optimism I had for the project. It wasn't so much that I'm an enormous fan of Romanek, but the idea that Disney balked at a darker version of the classic fairy tale, even as they are purportedly trying to revise the story, engenders a concern that we're just going to end up with another version of 2010's bland, and only slightly different, 'Alice in Wonderland.' That being said, Branagh has proven himself to be an outstanding director both when adapting Shakespeare and comic books. I am very much looking forward to his 'Jack Ryan,' as his genre sensibilities seem just as developed as his artistic prowess. I think he'll make a fine replacement for Romanek, I just hope that Disney isn't going to try and hamper his vision as they apparently did their last helmer.
What do you guys think? Holding out any hope for the new version of 'Cinderella?' Think Branagh is a fitting replacement for Romanek?

Someone mentioned ponicco live action. That was actually made before, it starred Jonathan Taylor Thomas as the voice.

Alice in Wonderland sucked because it didn't feel like a traditional Alice story, it looked bland (which is shocking coming from Burton) and it was nowhere near as creative/dark with it's elements as something like American McGee's Alice. Now they didn't have to have made it dark to make it good, but something like Alice leads itself more to darkness than Cinderella. I'd also rather have seen American McGee actually have gotten a chance to have made that film (like he was going to) instead of Burton literally half-assing it. Like really there is no way he gave Alice in Wonderland his all. Kenneth Branagh won't half ass it because the only thing he and Burton have in common is they've both shared the same hole.

He's a good replacement and he won't make it as dark, it'll still be less lighthearted but it won't be dark. Not every film has to be fucking dark to be better. Thor was great, and it wasn't dark at all. Cinderella is still a happy story with a happy ending for the most part. You shouldn't make it dark, just make it more true to life with Cinderella being a bit more miserable and the stepmother and stepsisters especially not just being dumb ugly bimbos.

Are we really saying that cartoons made 50 years ago should be the final word on classic fairy tales? I'm not suggesting that we need a live action "Pinnochio," but "Cinderella" is a fairy tale mostly about human characters, and it includes traditional themes of the human experience. Having said that, I think Branagh is a great choice for this.
I'd go even farther to say that there are still lots of great traditional stories, folk tales, fairy tales and myths that would make great films. Even familiar favorites like the Sinbad stories could warrant a reboot.

You know, I really sick of these so called "re-imagines" of fairy tales. They always say that they're going for a darker version of the classic, but they really mean is creating yet another generic gritty action movie with the fairy tale title slap on the cover.
I'm sure Branagh is a good choice but seriously, please do something different with this.
