Back in December, Megan Ellison, the producer who paid over $20 million for the rights to the 'Terminator' franchise, hired her brother David to be her financial and creative partner in an effort to get things rolling on the planned new films. David Ellison comes from Skydance, where he worked on projects like 'M:I-Ghost Protocol,' 'Jack Reacher,' and 'Star Trek Into Darkness.' Their first tasks were to find a director and a writer, and now it seems they've doubled up on the latter. The Ellison siblings have hired Patrick Lussier and Laeta Kalogridis to write 'Terminator 5.' Kalogridis wrote the likes of 'Shutter Island,' 'Avatar,' and 'Nightwatch.' To Lussier's credit are films such as 'Drive Angry,' which he wrote and directed, and 'My Bloody Valentine,' which he directed. The new series entry will be a co-production of Skydance and Annapurna, the latter having both 'Zero Dark Thirty' and 'The Master' in Oscar contention.
This is shaping up to be possibly the weirdest 'Terminator' to date. The collaboration between the Ellisons is already intriguing in that Annapurna has a catalog of more artistic films whereas Skydance is more renowned for its crowd-pleasing genre fare, and that's by no means a knock. On top of that, they've now hired the most bizarre couplet of screenwriters in recent memory. I really liked 'Drive Angry.' I found it to be a silly, off-the-wall fictive sequel to 'Race with the Devil.' However, nothing else in Lussier's canon has been worthy of even that sort of paltry praise. On the other hand, Kalogridis has written some incredibly successful films that have simultaneously earned their fair share of critical notice. That's not to say 'Shutter Island' or 'Avatar' are perfect films with no detractors, nor that Kalogridis hasn't written a stinker or two, but let's just say that her track record is noticeably stronger than Lussier's. All that said, I'm really interested in how these two collaborate to potentially craft something that is both thoughtful sci-fi and extremely entertaining.
What do you guys think? Happy with the writing duo hired for 'Terminator 5?' Think the new film can turn the franchise around?

Comment by TheGSXR on January 22, 2013 at 2:40pm ...why hasn't this franchise been terminated already?
That said, it's probably going to get my money either way.
Comment by Driznar on January 18, 2013 at 12:43pm I don't care what is in the middle, but as long as you see a terminator being constructed and you then see through its eyes (maybe zoom into the optics and pan 180° or "blink" as the eyes start to light up?) as the programming is being uploaded and booted as the intro and the deactivation sequence as the outro (my only issue with T2, btw) I will go see it in theaters.
Comment by Movie Buff on January 18, 2013 at 10:59am Fact check: James Cameron wrote Avatar, no one else.
Comment by Amazing Pinto on January 18, 2013 at 1:16am This is my pitch for the next terminator movie. Old Arnie fights machines in the future. He's too old to be a robot, but he can be in the movie as the human who was used by Skynet for the T-800 project.
You could also bring back someone from Salvation. Anton Yeltsin, maybe?
Comment by Sachal Khan on January 18, 2013 at 12:42am Hey man this weird band of misfits might just be what the terminator franchise needs. Like, to hell with playing it safe and doing what's thought to be the norm. Fucking go all at it. At this point the Terminator franchise has no other option but to go total weird and bombastic.

My problem with Salvation was that it just seemed kind of lazy. The idea of having a Terminator film taking place after Skynet nearly wipes out all of humanity has a lot of potential that they didn't even seem to recognize, specifically that it it is chronologically both a sequel and a prequel. Instead of having Kyle Reese be sent back at some point while progressing the overall story of the series, seeing how those two ideas could intertwine and be really fun, they settled on making a kind of bland, forgettable prequel-ish, reboot-ish thing. The only notable parts, I thought, were Sam Worthington's character and the brief inclusion of "Rooster". Aside from that the movie, as it is, is just really weak. McG's only influence on my opinion was whatever bad influence he may have had on the movie.
Comment by Ferry2dead on January 17, 2013 at 10:18pm Leave it alone since the dark knight killed the series!
Comment by HudsonsirhesHicks on January 17, 2013 at 5:58pm To all those saying don't do it : Ellison's payed 20 mill for the rights for the franchise. So theres gonna be at least one more - possibly 2 or 3 depending on how much or how little money they make. Terminator Salvation made $370 mill worldwide on a budget of $200 mill, so they will have to up their game to make this work.
Comment by CHEEZYSPAM on January 17, 2013 at 5:12pm I don't get people's distaste for T:Salvation. While it wasn't up to T1 & T2 standards (what is?) it certainly was better than the abysmal T3 movie! And then the extremely lackluster TV show. All I can come up with was that it had a kick ass trailer that revealed one of the key moments of the film and then people shitting on it because it was directed by McG. As an action film it was good and the surprise cameo of Schwarzenegger's T-800 was awesome to see!!
For the 5th film I hope they finally "catch up" to the future to where they send Reece back in time and just leave the series alone. It will have created an entire loop of the timeline continuing with the 1st movie. I mean they have to finish this series up once and for all with the established characters and not drag it out any more! And I don't want to see any side stories centering around another rebel group fighting the machines in some fruitless endeavor.
It's really just beating a dead horse after the end of T2. Everything that needed to be said had been said right up to the point the credits starting to roll. Everything afterwards really has no purpose.
