Around the Spillverse, we've talked a lot about last year's 'V/H/S.' It was a horror film that combined two separate subgenres, anthology and found footage, into something quite unique. It also featured a collaboration of some of the best up-and-coming talent in horror. The upcoming sequel, 'S-VHS' looks to be an augmentation of what we got the first time around. Bringing together the likes of Jason Eisner ('Hobo with a Shotgun'), Gareth Evans ('The Raid: Redemption'), and Eduardo Sanchez ('The Blair Witch Project'), 'S-VHS' has just seen the release of its first trailer. It's incredibly intense and hints at everything from zombies to alien abduction. I can't freaking wait to see this. Take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think.

'S-VHS' premieres this week at Sundance with a wide release soon to follow

Anyway, "Take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think" was asked and we answered.

I disagree, Austin.  Found footage movies have both limitations and freedoms almost every other genre doesn't.  The limitation comes with its job to suspend the audience's disbelief -- something that gets harder to do with each movie.  There has to be a reason someone would want to videotape every shot.  If there isn't a reason to do so, or safety and common sense dictates otherwise, then an annoyance sets in which only die-hard fans of the genre can overlook.  It's main freedom is it doesn't have to conform to the structure and watermarks traditional films have to.  Audiences seem to be satisfied with 40 minutes of nothing interrupted by a scare as long as the movie wraps up with action or a twist.  So much lattitude is given to found footage movies that I think it's a misnomer to call them Movies.  They are more like amusement park Dark Rides, where people go to them for the thrill and not the characters, story, etc.  Trollhunter overcame the limitation by providing a reason to exist and went beyond resting on the freedoms by delivering interesting content with a dry sense of humor.  The other freedom ff movies have is its immediacy.  The hyper-reality of video footage removes that barrier and distance 24fps has that the action is happening to someone else.  It puts the treat in the audience's lap.  In my opinion, that is found footage's saving grace and selling point.  Your argument that people who don't enjoy the genre need to stop looking at it in a black & white way (and letting the "grow up" part pass) isn't accurate.  This is probably more than you wanted to read but it may express the opinion of more than  a few of us.

okay for all you people complaining about the ff genre and saying all the originality has been stripped from it and you want it too die... grow the fuck up and stop viewing the world in such a black/white way. Every genre has both good and bad movies. I cant stand half horror/romantic comedies but then an amazing one comes along and takes an original take on the genre/sub-genre. Its all about the talent and ideas behind the film, not the genre thats the problem.

I really like V/H/S, this looks OK, from what I could gather. haha.

Please, no more god damn found footage, they have successfully sucked any form of originality from that concept and have turned itinto an annoying gimmick. Let it die and burn in  hell.

John, I'm with you regarding Trollhunter being tops in the ff genre.  As well-crafted as Cloverfield was, it never got over the "why the heck are you still videotaping" annoyance factor for me (everytime I heard TJ Miller's voice behind the camera, I wanted to yell, "I get it.  This is suppose to be real.  Now shut up and stop shaking the camera so I can try to enjoy the movie".  There was a reason for the camera to be rolling in Trollhunter.  I think that's how I felt about the opening clips of V/H/S on youtube.  I was thinking "why are these guys videotaping all this?"

Again, there's some poor cop that has to catalog all these crime scene video tapes going, "Are you kidding me?" *stacks it up on a huge pile of video tapes and other recording devices and pushes the bin down a VAST warehouse full of tapes.

And don't forget, one of the Mo brothers, the guys who did the "other" great Indonesian film, Macabre. It was shown in the 2009 Fantastic Fest i think.
