If it's crap ... We'll tell you

If you've been following this site regularly for the last year or so, you're probably well aware of how much most of us lost our minds for Gareth Evan's martial arts spectacular 'The Raid' (redubbed 'The Raid: Redemption'). It was an unflinching gauntlet of pure, visceral action that swept through festivals and theaters like a force of nature. For a while, we'd been hearing that a plan was in place for an American remake, but Gareth Evans is also planning a direct sequel. The followup film will be called 'Berandal,' and actor/badass Iko Uwais will be returning. And now, some new details have come to light via Evans' own Twitter account. Evidently the sequel begins shooting January 19th and the first scene takes place a mere two hours after the conclusion of the first film.
I can't think of enough ways to voice how completely in support of this project I truly am. I didn't just like 'The Raid' because kicked unbelievable amounts of ass and found a bounty of creative ways to dispatch fools. Don't get me wrong, it did do that, but what was really impressive about the film, apart from its brutal fight choreography, was its understanding of the appropriate way to shoot action cinema. I get so frustrated with studio action movies that are shot in extreme closeup and feel they need to cut every .5 seconds leading to something that looks like it was edited by Leatherface. Yeah, I'm looking at you, 'Quantum of Solace.' 'The Raid' allowed fight scenes to be shot wide, with several moves executed before switching angles. As an audience, we were therefore able to feel the full impact of those battles. I applaud Evans for this and it makes me ravenously eager to see 'Berandal.' The idea that it takes place just a couple hours after 'The Raid' makes perfect sense. Another reason we all dug the first movie so much is how relentlessly it was paced. Those guys were very much running a marathon of violence and that's what lead the film to feel so perpetually exciting. I can't wait to see how poor Iko's bad day gets worse before it gets better.
What do you guys think? Excited for 'Berandal?' Do you think the dovetailing of the two films is a good idea or would you prefer a little breather between bombastic action sequences?

Comment by Mother Superior Pumpkin Sinclair on January 4, 2013 at 7:17pm This film has raised the bar on fight choreography in this generation. Nothing so far has been on pare besides the old martial arts movies from the 70's. It makes every movie look so tame, I remember i used to think "The man from nowhere" was great and even that can't hold the torch to the bad-assery that is THE RAID.
Comment by Mother Superior Pumpkin Sinclair on January 4, 2013 at 7:09pm I love this movie, i just watched it again yesterday. ALWAYS GO FOR THE NECK! That is what i learned.

Comment by 31 on January 4, 2013 at 5:26pm Very excited for this. Loved The Raid, and also love Merantau. i think Evan knows how to make the movies he wants to make. I have utter faith in him.
Comment by Wally Smith on January 4, 2013 at 5:14pm I loved the Raid and Merantau so I have no real skepticism towards the movi and its plot. The only thing I hope to see different is Iko with a pair of braces because there is something about his teeth that urk the fuck out of me haha
Comment by TheBoneMage on January 4, 2013 at 4:53pm Berandal(Indo for Thugs)? Alright, sounds fine but the set up may take things into stupidity as it's the same character less than a day after getting his ass kicked all day in another do or die situation.
Comment by Dorian Gray on January 4, 2013 at 4:49pm this can't come soon enough
Comment by Ecc3ntric Sanity on January 4, 2013 at 4:08pm the more i think about it, the more i realize "the raid" was my fav movie last year...... bring on the sequel
