Could We See Rick Baker Return To 'Star Wars?'

Rick Baker is a name revered by many a film fan, and for good reason. He is one of the most accomplished makeup artists in the industry. He has won a record seven Oscars for his makeup effects and eleven nominations total, and was just awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This is the guy that did the makeup in Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video and created the transformation scene in 'An American Werewolf in London.' Need we say more? Because we easily could. Among his many other impressive career benchmarks, one of his first gigs was creating some of the aliens in that infamous Mos Eisley Cantina in 'Star Wars.' During his Walk of Fame ceremony, he expressed excitement that Disney and Lucasfilm are doing new 'Star Wars' movies, because he has often fantasized about returning to that universe. He also had some criticisms of where the newer movies ended up, technologically speaking...

"I think the problem that people have with the digital stuff is the problem I have: Just because you can do anything doesn’t mean that you should. Instead of having a spaceship battle with three space ships they have 3000 space ships. Everything is so big and there’s so much going on, you lose reality. It takes you out of it."

I could not agree more, Mr. Baker. That sentiment of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" is at the core of what made the prequels, and unfortunately many later George Lucas films, so frustratingly bad. My excitement level for the new 'Star Wars' films would increase ten fold if Baker came back. I know this is far from a confirmation that he'll be returning, but Disney would be bugnuts to not hire him. His fingerprints on the first film, the one that started it all, make this a fitting and welcome reunion, but I'm also simply enamored of his craft. And the thing about Baker is that he's not calling for an abandonment of digital effects. He's worked on films that have used plenty of CG ('Men in Black' for example), but he is one of the old guard that advocates digital as an augmentation of, instead of a replacement for, practical. I wholeheartedly agree with that approach. The mind boggles trying to conceive of the diverse and marvelous creatures Baker could create and make part of the 'Star Wars' canon for future generations.

What do you guys think? Is Baker's possible return to 'Star Wars' a good thing? Could the new films benefit from more practical effects?

Yes pleaaaase!!!!! Ricks MIB stuff was amazing as usual, and he would bring a huge amount of visual flair to any Star Wars sequel. Also one problem of digital stuff is the actor has nothing to play off, but with Ricks creations on set the actors will be inspired and amazed by his creations and this will definitely ground thei r performances, just like using real sets instead of blue screens does.

There's nothing better than when good CG is combined with great practical FX, see Jurassic Park or Pan's Labrynth but it requires loads more lightning bottles to pull off the ultimate magic trick, Baker is one of the Masters so this would be great but it really comes down to the right director, writer, and producer...

Sadly old prequels George wasn't the young Maverick being forced to use every creative trick in the book on the first 3 films, surrounded by collaborators instead of 'yes men' we got CG black pudding of the shitty kind!

There's some sparks of ideas in the stodge that destroyed childhoods lol but no lightning, let's hope it starts with some rip-roaring writing and then we'll see...

It all really boils down to an issue about how you feel about CG.

I think CG is overused, I prefer good old practical effects to CG effects any day. I like people like Guillermo Del Toro that mesh them both together seamlessly to achieve their visions.

I personally prefer when CG is utilized in such a way that the effect is completely dependent on the technology in order to succeed. Things like Terminator 2's T-1000 or Jurassic Park's Dinosaurs, or even something like Green Lantern's constructs are perfect examples of this.

As far as Star Wars goes: Stick with more practical effects for the creatures/aliens, or maybe mesh that with CG to make something really special. But honestly, space stuff? I'm all for being CG.

One thing I've always appreciated that CG brought to Star Wars was the fact that Lucas got to be more ambitious in terms of scale and scope. In the one prequel that I'm willing to defend as a great movie and good Star Wars movie (Revenge of the Sith), I think one of the greatest uses of CG was the opening sequence with the massive space battle above Coruscaunt. I found the way he used CG create such a vast and busy space battle just as artistically admirable as anything he did in the original trilogy.

I'm surprised Rick Baker still manages to find work in this day when everything is CG!

I didn't have a problem with the CG or huge battles in the prequels, it was the acting, character development and story that needed help.

WHY? When every damn thing in the FUCKING movie is going to be CGI!!

Rick Baker should really be a part of every movie.
