'Deus Ex' Is The Next Game In Line For A Movie
Over the last handful of days, the name of the game in movie news has been the adaptation of, well, games. First it was 'Assassin's Creed' moving forward with Michael Fassbender starring, and then just yesterday we learned that another Ubisoft game, 'Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell,' would also be coming to the big screen behind Tom Hardy in the role of Sam Fisher. Now it appears 'Deus Ex' is the next game franchise in line to be reset as a cinematic adventure. CBS films has announced their plans to adapt the Square Enix game 'Deus Ex: Human Revolution' into a film with Scott Derrickson ('Sinister') set to direct. Derrickson will also write the script along with C. Robert Cargill...Carlyle himself. Set in a sort of technological renaissance, the game centers on an ex-SWAT security specialist who, in order to uncover a global conspiracy, must embrace mechanical augmentation to his physical form. 'Human Revolution' is the third entry in the series and will serve as the basis for the movie.
First and foremost, congrats to Carlyle for landing another screenwriting gig. I am confident he and Derrickson will put together a killer script for this adaptation. That confidence has nothing to do with my knowing Cargill, and everything to do with the strength of 'Sinister's screenplay. Big surprise here, I haven't played the 'Deus Ex' games, so I don't have much of a frame of reference. However, it has been described as a cyberpunk-themed role-playing game with grand philosophical ideas. That more than piques my interest. Moreover, this announcement coming on the heels of two other game-to-movie news bits has me wondering if we're poised for our own renaissance. The 'Resident Evil' series limps on and the latest 'Silent Hill' flick definitely showed why it probably won't continue to be a franchise. Beyond those, 'Prince of Persia' and 'Max Payne' were the most recent. The shortcomings of these recent entries speak to the overwhelming trend in these adaptations toward low quality. The talent and passion assigned to this new batch of videogame movies in development has me wondering if the trend could be fundamentally bucked. If we might actually see a rash of good videogame adaptations...dare I say it.

Congrats to Carlyle! Hopefully this movie kicks all the ass and leads to a huge, massively successful career for him. Glad to see it. Though this seems like one of those projects which might have a hard time getting off the ground.

LOL How did I know this topic would bring Carlyle back on here.lol.Well Duhhh Of course he would. :) lol.And At this point we have about as much Luck with Gore doing aBioshock film as You do getting a 200mil $ budget for this movie.

@Carlyle - Congrats, Carlyle! Best of luck in your future cinematic endeavors. While I'm interested in the film, I'm a bit concerned that the very nature of the game's complex choice-based narrative will be shelved for a much more streamlined action film that simplifies the moral complexity of mechanical augmentations and the thematic question of "what makes someone human?" That being said, I look forward to the movie given that you come off as an accomplished writer, and I hope the movie is great!
And I STILL FUCKING WANT a Gore Verbinski BIOSHOCK movie, god damnit!
Maybe. It would be difficult to translate onto film (for a number of reasons, the narrative structure being chief among them), but it would be fascinating to see be brought over to another visual medium. I doubt it would get the respect it deserves by including the dark subject matter (in it's video game form, it would EASILY get an R-rating) since the studios wanted to push Verbinski on a PG-13.
@BLU Year - Yeah. Video games don't need the justification of a movie adaptation anymore as a watermark of public acceptance especially since the video game industry has overtaken the film industry in almost every aspect. But, if Hollywood is going to adapt stories, they might as well adapt damn good ones.

Can I pitch in and say that games don't have to be movies and vice-versa? Just to put that out there since I haven't heard anyone put it on the convo.
