THE LEAGUE OF EXTREMELY ORDINARY GENTLEMEN: Volume 8, Issue 12: Number 200!

THE LEAGUE OF EXTREMELY ORDINARY GENTLEMEN: Volume 8, Issue 12: Number 200!

Have we really recorded 200 episodes of this show? And as long as they go, that would make for, what 500+ hours of us on microphone? Yeah, like the world needed that. But, it's too late for take-backs, so we celebrate, in traditional LEOG manner, with a bacchanalia of epic proportions. It's like the LEOG's of old: both a present and a punishment, depending on what kind of LEOG fan you are. Check it...

And also check out these two bits pulled from the ancient days of yore that were among the most popular all-time LEOG moments with our fans:

Leon tries bravely to describe the plot to "Batman R.I.P."

Beau explains why "Slumdog Millionaire" is shit...or has too much shit anyway.

And lastly, Magic Pants put together this giant mix of all his favorite moments...

Just listened to the "Batman: RIP" clip...  Hilarious.  Grant Morrison clearly needs help.  And at 23:55, when you mentioned the 'burying Batman, why not just shoot him' thing, it reminded me of an old skit from an episode of Saturday Night Live, where the villains from James Bond films were on a talk show.  Andy Rooney (yes, the Sixty Minutes guy) was Goldfinger (I think) and when asked what to do when Bond inevitably shows up, he said "Just shoot him. If you're close enough to drip poison down a string into his mouth, you're close enough to shoot him."

LEOG LISTENING pt 3 (I'm determined to get thru the whole episode, even in the middle of all this wedding-prep...)

00:66:33 - I really think the Justice League should be big, bright and modern-day bordering on Mythological.  Dark Grittiness for the WHOLE thing doesn't work.

00:67:40 - Cyrus I really hope that more "outside the box" ideas like that one start to happen.  I'd love to see things like that happen... having an HBO or FX or AMC lead into their cinematical project.

00:70:46 - "The hammer...er...wing... is my penis"

00:74:35 - BLACK PANTHER FUCK YES.

00:75:14 - Agree with both Harris and Randy.  a mid-aged BlackPanther could work awesomely, but also having it be a "passing of the torch" story from previous King to new King would work well.  There's a lot of room to manuver with a Black Panther story.  I got my fingers crossed for this one.

00:76:50 - I think Tudyk would be good as Hank Pym... he can play the light (Firefly), and the dark (Dollhouse).

00:79:05 - Don't underestimate Rocket Raccon. :)

00:88:48 - Oy vey

Also: Randy is the 3rd person who's opinion I value, who has declared their admiration for "Cougar Town." I'm wondering if it's actually good... or if I'm slowly phasing into an alternate mirror-mirror universe.

00:94:30 - Oh my god

00:94:35 - Oh shit XD

00:94:55 - Rob COURDRY didn't react to that joke positively?  huh.  how odd...

00:96:03 - LOL.

OK for the "300th episode of LEOG" I nominate "Grant's Crash and Burn at the TV Party" story as a great LEOG moment.

101:49 - Ah there's Beau's brogue peeking out!

106:36 - Allison was a REALLY early LEOG guest-turned-regular.

107:26 - Congrats Fish!  Making a place in the art-world.

108:17 - Jesus... seriously?  WTF......

109:30 - A lot of Grant's reticence I think was Jason slapping him down every LEOG episode at the time.

111:00 - LEON, dude, I never stopped listening... just... haven't been able to type these Novel-length comments anymore...

Re: Lost - I used to be the kind of person who would delve into theories, form timelines and explorations... And while I really love Lost - that was the show that made me STOP going nuts with the whole breakdowns and analytics...  Just, to watch, enjoy, and let it wash over me.  Enjoy it in the moment, and just join the ride.

(I'll leave the breakdowns and theories for building up my own stories)

117:09 - LOL.

122:10 - class move... knowing you forgot his name the whole time, but not letting it get in the way.

125:11 - This is pretty awesome, an unfurling of LEOG history, member by member.

128:29 - "An Infusion of Cutesy" That is so damn adorable.  Kayla rocks.

130:10 - BRAIN TWIN ACTIVATE.  Go Peter!

132:00 - Holy shit, seriously?  WHOA.  LOL.  That's a mis-read.  Oh wow.  and the gags that followed.  It's like, an induction of awkward racist humor.  What an awesome origin story.

134:10 - THAT was Peter?  Wow.  that's a costume.

137:55 -  (This is cool... hearing Harris' Secret origin story... because up until now it's just been known as "Harris was always at the Nomad and...")

142:16 - That prank was really amazing... I mean, I totally feel sorry for Brian Salisbury... but it was a component that helped Sell the joke...

144:16 - Holy shit I FORGOT About that....

146:16 - Alternate Universe and the Time-Travel episodes were GREAT ones.

ALSO don't forget the ENDING of the APOCALYPSE episode (featuring the guest appearance of Burt from "We're Alive")

147:18 Joe R. Lansdale is one of the coolest and awesomest guys ever.

(Okay on that note, I'm Gonna have to pause this again, come back to the rest later... On to more Wedding prep stuff.  the tasks of Best Man are never done.  Until after the wedding, at least)

Justice League Dream Crew & Casting - Before I resume the Podcast, I'll wrack my brains and try to figure out who I think would be a good...

Superman- John Hamm (He's the nigh-spitting-image of Alex Ross' Superman)
Wonder Woman- Gina Carano.  Dayum.
Batman- (I really like Christian Bale but since they are going to re-boot it right away) Ryan Gosling. (watch "Drive."  Quiet, mysterious, professional, and when need be, vicious.  And the Meme's would be funny. "Hey girl.... I'm Batman...")
Green Lantern (Hal)- Nathan Fillion.
Flash- (Barry Allen) Peter Krause (Six Feet Under) If it's Wally West, Neil Patrick Harris.  (Actually NPH could be a good Barry, as well)
Aquaman - See, I think they should go the "Brave and the Bold" route and get someone super arrogant and medieval King.   My knee-jerk reaction would be Chris Hemsworth because his portrayal of "Thor" is still fresh in my mind, but they'd never poach him from Marvel.  So I'll say Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister from Game of Thrones)
Oracle - Cary Mulligan.
Martian Manhunter - Christopher Eccleston.
Green Arrow - I'm with Grant, Charlie Hunnam.  Good casting choice, that.

And Director?  Jeez.  I'll have to puzzle this one out... Whedon WOULD be awesome, but after Warner's dicked him around so much with his Wonder Woman re-writes I doubt he'd go back.
I'd also suggest Edgar Wright... who is great with getting a big cast to gel together, and is great at respecting the source material.  I don't doubt Whedon or Wright's geek-credentials or track-record, but They're both more suited for the "flawed Heroes w/ feet of Clay, who rise to the occasion" sensibility which is firmly on the Marvel side of things.  I think the JLA would need a director who really push the "this is Mythology...TODAY" a sort of "Gods live among us" a grandiose sense of awe and wonder.

Travel back in time, and snatch Spielberg after putting "Close Encounters" "Raiders of the Lost Arc" under his belt.

Time-travelling aside, I'm with Grant and say Alphonso Curon would be a damn good choice.  He was able to work with a big cast, and balanced a lot of the source material of HP book 3 and distilled what made HP3 work and made one hell of a movie.

I don't post a great deal either, but I just wanted to say thanks for all the entertainment. You guys are the best, and if I can ever come to Austin, I would love to meet you all some day.

Regards

Craig

That was an amazing episode. This is by far my favorite podcast on the site and I look forward to each new episode every week.

I've been a member of this site for years and don't comment much, and the nostalgia was wonderful. It's good to take a moment and look back and see just how far you've come and all of the fun you've had along the way.

Thank you for helping me get through college...those long nights of studying* would have been unbearable otherwise. You've helped me come out of my shell and become a more insightful thinker on movies, tv, comics, etc. Thank you, and Long Live The League!

*Among other things

I just have two comments, and this is for anyone who's at a party and they see soimeone spike a drink, even if you don't know the spiker, don't let the drinker drink that drink! The other thing, who would make a good Black Panther, I say David Oyelowo P.s. ROBO COP IS A GREAT MOVIE

Comment by The GodDamn Fatman on June 11, 2012 at 6:38pm

Soo many great moments guys. Thanks for all the laughs. Oh and BTW RoboCop is AMAZING. I saw it for the first time as an adult and loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Grant. I'm glad I'm not the only one who things Nathan Fillion could be a great Green Lantern. But I cant see anyone but Gina Carano as Wonder Woman.

JLA dream casting?
Director: If Nolan says no, as I stated on the podcast Alfonso Curan did great with HP and its geekiness and ensemble. I would love to see what he would do.

Casting? How about:
Batman - Jon Hamm, Supes - I'll give this new dude in 'Man of Steel' a chance, Wonder Woman - Olivia Wilde, Green Lantern - Hal? Fillion Stewart? Anthony Mackie, Flash - Bradley Cooper, Hawkman - Adrian Brody, Green Arrow - Charlie Hunnam, Aquaman - Jai Courtney

LEOG LISTENING - pt2.  All the news that's fit to print... well, not print.  Print is dead.

00:31:14 - I dunno.  I can't really say that Winterfell applies...because Winter aint coming anywhere NEAR Austin in any sense of the word.  Mainly because the motto won't work.  It wouldn't be "Winter is coming"  it'd be "A somewhat chilly Autumn will eventually come... for a little while at least"

00:36:37 - LOL.  nice one, Harris.

00:38:50 - So Paul Verhoven is the "Soft Serve Dog Poop" of satirical Action movies.  Heh.  I don't agree, but hey, Joe brings up some valid points.

00:41:19 - (My attention was slightly diverted at this point, as I'm also working on the speech for my brother's wedding, and planning the bachelor party.  What brought my attention back to the podcast was "Jeez, they're talking a LOT about DICK on this podcast..." Dick Dick Dick...

00:42:27 - Holy cow, I've never heard Leon so exasperated on mic before!

00:43:16 - Here's to you, Ray Bradbury.  Hats off, Drinks raised... One of the finest writers I've ever read.

00:52:14 - Yeah, we can hear Beau outside.  :)

00:53:50 - You know I've never seen Hudson Hawk...

00:54:49 - LOL

00:55:40 - Dogshit is 100% better than the Twilight movies!  It's great, it removes waste from your Dog's system... it helps fertilze plants, upholding the circle of life...

00:56:00 - LOL what?  ha ha

00:56:10 - LOL

00:57:48 - I'm totally with Leon on "My Own Worst Enemy" It had heaps of redeeming qualities, and it is too bad it didn't last.

00:60:52 - I don't know if Warner Brother's has their shit together enough to get a JLA movie together.

00:63:28 - Shit you know what?  it's been a while since there was a round-table "Dream casting" style question on a LEOG.

(Gotta pick this up at a later time, gotta get some wedding preparation done... Also it'll give ME time to think up what my dream casting and dream writer/director would be for a JLA movie...)

LEOG LISTENING - pt1. Discussion with the Original Ordinary Gentlemen.

00:00:01 - Fuck yeah, LEOG Themesong.  :D

00:00:52 - Freaking hilarious.  "All in the LEOG"

00:03:15 - With a show like LEOG, with all the jokes that get into "Blue Christmas" or all the stories of Beau's past of killing hookers, or anything that comes out of Rubio's mouth, you know the stuff that gets cut out is gotta be pretty incriminating stuff.

00:04:33 - Hard to imagine anyone being mad at Leon.

00:07:13 - First one was 08, I think.  That was the first "Spill Party".  Second one was 09 (my first time in Austin), Still called "Spill Party" but was two nights of partying.  It was 2009 when Spillo Josh a.k.a Dork Knight suggested "Spill Dot Con" and from 2010, off it went.

00:07:57 - Running jokes have to be natural.  They'll sprout up naturally and will eventually have to be put down and killed before it gets too much...

00:17:08 - That kind of chair that's operated by breath that Pierce in Community had.

00:17:48 - I picture Beau would have a series of Penguin Trick-Umbrellas.

00:18:30 - Hey Spillios, Take it from the RoomN8, ol' Uncle Cyrus cut back on alcohol by a significant amount.  if you're going to buy Cyrus a drink, make it a virgin drink.  Or a Sody-pop.  Or give him a Bruce Wayne-special, bubbly Ginger-ale served in a champagne glass.  Or Ribs.  Or awesome Tacos.  or fine gourmet cheeses, crackers and mustards.  But go easy on the beers and shots.  Unless it's Sunday.  :)

00:19:52 - the new house, it's not as easy to be quiet when the mics are on and recording!

00:20:20 - When I was doing these comments week-after-week in Syracuse, I had a dreary (but easy) day-job that allowed me to type out those long time-coded comment posts...

Since moving to Austin, things have been much more active, busy and crazy (but crazy in a good way).  I admit it's been hard to find a steady weekly groove... makes it tough sometimes to consistently do the comments like I used to.

00:23:00 - Shit, you know, I have espresso drinks all the time... but regular standard old Coffee gets me jittery and makes my heart beat an extra beat every second.  Not a big coffee fan.  Blearg.

00:25:55 - It's hard to say goodbye during Spill Dot Con.  (it sucks I can't actually BE there to have a chance to say Good Bye...)
