Sylvester Stallone is an interesting guy. He's responsible for both classic action film characters as well as much mocked schlock. When you watch him in something like, say, 'Over the Top' or 'Demolition Man,' your estimation may be that he's dim-witted or generally beef-headed. However, I've heard many an interview with Stallone in which he came off as poised, eloquent, and even insightful. Recently, he turned that insight to the state of the modern action film. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Sly voiced his concerns that superheroes are overshadowing the kinds of films that made he and Arnie household names. Here's what he said...
"This genre unfortunately is becoming...let's just say it's fading away. You have the superheroes today which are possessed with all the extraordinary powers; they can blink and a fireball comes out of there. It's great. And then you have a bunch of us which is just your basic male-pattern badness...Kind of like hands-on action. The movie business has worked assiduously to discourage intelligent, discerning people, FROM the theater. They have worked hard to get rid of you, because you don't go and then buy toys and games."
Pretty stern words from Rambo/Rocky/Judge Dredd, but do you agree? Is this half-bitter-half-melancholy rant a realization that 'The Expendables 2' probably won't make as much money as 'The Avengers?' Or perhaps, does Sly have a point? Before superhero films became huge business, my cinematic heroes were guys like Snake Plissken, Indiana Jones, and Han Solo. These weren't guys with powers, other than the heightened ability to be utterly badass. When you look at modern action films, outside of comic book characters, who are our current heroes? How many Jason Statham characters are plastered on the walls of younger action fans? And let's face it, the iconic stars of 'The Fast and the Furious' franchise are the cars; so much so that they've alternated and interchanged cast members and the movies worked just as well commercially. I'm interested to know what your stance is on this issue. Are the macho, superpower-less action heroes a thing of the past? Is the genre in peril? Also, "male-pattern badness?" Awesome!
Sound off, Spillios!

Comment by Combat Marshmallow on June 2, 2012 at 4:02pm I think there's an ebb and flow with these kind of things. Eventually superhero movies won't be a giant moneymaking craze and something else will take its place. Traditional action movies/heroes might come back, or something else might pop up and surprise us all.
Plus, it depends on the movie too. The movie has to be fantastic. Right now, a lot of writers are putting their storytelling efforts into superhero movies (for the most part *coughGreenLanterncough*), when they could just as easily use those powers for action/adventure/scifi/whatever else. People will pay to see movies that are entertaining, well-written, and impactful, no matter what genre it is.
Comment by Azteca on June 1, 2012 at 2:18pm I grew up with a healthy dose of action flicks and even before the heroics of the real life operators wasting away terrorists, in the 80's we had the likes of flicks like Delta Force of of guys just going in and whooping ass. How about other unknowns like The Exterminator 1 & 2? Using a bloody flamethrower to eliminate the bad guys! What is lacking in today's action flicks is the satisfaction the viewer receives when we see our hero give the bad guy their just desserts in such a bad ass fashion that you cannot help but nod at their method.
Bad guy thinks he has a one up on Charles Bronson because he has a bulletproof vest on? Eat rocket launcher! Remember another flick Platoon Leader where they searched for the Viet-cong group that ambushed them? Rain of grenades!
I do not want some kind of social commentary in my flicks I just want to be entertained.
Although The Hurt Locker was fuckin bad ass doncha think?
Comment by Sean Price on May 31, 2012 at 8:27pm Plain and simple, people are infatuated w/ eyegasms. What's the point of the 3d craze. Most movie advertisements show the most elaborate display of special effects and then the critics slam the movie for being boring or relying heavily on CG. The problem with the action genre is the action has to be top-notch quality (not quantity) and the action heroes aren't distinct enough (Chuck Norris and Bruce Willis are the exceptions for the 80's and 90's). The villians also have to be top-notch. But to me, superhero movies are part of the action genre. Their stories are automatically more interesting (especially to the people who aren't into comics) than the average joe badass. We get to see different worlds, aliens, ridiculous weaponry, etc. Anyway, we need a good Punisher. Come on Stallone, give in, it's got your name written all over it!
Comment by Jason on May 31, 2012 at 1:13pm Or it's because most action movies today suck? Last I recall there's at least one guy with an action movie that has done very well and everyone knows his name: Jason Bourne.
Comment by HudsonsirhesHicks on May 30, 2012 at 8:57pm @Austin - What about Inception? That was a smart movie that made a shit load of money. So..
Comment by Damocles on May 30, 2012 at 1:27pm I think the big issue is greed. If studio's didn't need every film to make 200 million in profit then we could get more intelligent action/horror films. Movies like "The Raid", "Tucker & Dale", and "Cabin in the Woods" make money just not gang buster numbers. Expendibles will make money they just won't make 300 million in profit, anything more then 25 million dollars in profit should be good enough to merit more of that genre.
Comment by JamesB on May 30, 2012 at 12:45pm The genre is dying, Stallone, because people like you keep making really shitty action movies. How about taking some time to sit down and watch a movie that just recently handed you your ass like "The Raid"?
Comment by Stephan on May 30, 2012 at 11:40am @Austen: "Smart movies don't make any money?" Really? You keep thinking that.
Comment by Jer G. Gernault on May 30, 2012 at 11:12am WOA. EXACTLY WHAT I THINK OF ANIME POST HARUHI
Comment by Austen Messick on May 30, 2012 at 10:38am I really think that it isn't that the studios want just dumb entertainment but the public. Smart movies just don't make any money. If smart movies made money, then they would make them. Also, I think that it isn't like studios are like: "you gotta dumb this down." I think they look at it like a checklist.
1.) Is the plot simple to follow? Yes
2.) Are the stakes super high? Yes
3.) Is there an action sequence at every major plot turn? Yes
4.) Do each of the main characters have a unique power or specialty? Yes
If you work within what they want, you can have a smart movie (like Avengers). But if all you care about is making sure everything on their checklist is checked, it ends up kind of shitty.
