Outkast's Andre 3000 (Andre Benjamin) is looking to once again expand his acting repertoire, this time in a way that directly relates back to music. The rapper-turned-actor is set to star in a Jimi Hendrix biopic called 'All Is By My Side.' The film will center on Jimi's discovery by the then girlfriend of The Rolling Stone's Keith Richards and his trip to London where he recorded his iconic debut album 'Are You Experienced.' It will therefore span only the years of 1966-1967. The script for 'All Is By My Side' was penned by John Ridley ('U-Turn,' 'Three Kings'). It will begin shooting in Ireland in the next three weeks and was co-produced by Richard Kelley's Darko Entertainment. No word yet on a release date.
I gotta say, I'm pretty excited about this. Jimi Hendrix is one of my favorite musicians and I'd love to see a biopic about him. I know 'The Wire's Wood Harris played the legendary rock star in a made-for-TV movie in 2000, but I haven't seen it yet. Any Spillios out there care to weigh in on it? What strikes me as interesting about this project is that here again we have a micro-scale biopic much like 'My Week with Marilyn' and 'Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho.' While I'm intrigued at seeing all the infinitesimal details and circumstance that lead to the creation of 'Are You Experienced,' I can't help but feel like Hendrix's life is packed with interesting material that we won't see in this film by the very nature of its approach. Not that I think it'll be bad, just quite limited. In any event, I have been impressed with Andre 3000 as an actor and I think he'll do a fine job inhabiting Hendrix.
What do you guys think? Has this role been well cast? Does the limited scope concern you? What is your favorite Hendrix song?

Comment by It's Just Ryan on May 8, 2012 at 5:07pm He is a decent actor. Not bad but not great either. If there's a good director I think he could pull it off. Anyway I'm a Hendrix fan so I'm seeing it either way.
Comment by Mr. Pretty Tony on May 8, 2012 at 4:58pm I would end the movie at Woodstock 69
Comment by Dr. Detfink on May 8, 2012 at 4:23pm I like the idea of only penning a few years of this rock icon's life because there's so much going on in a star's life. Be cool if Andre can pull it off.
Comment by Devin Black on May 8, 2012 at 3:35pm Both artists are sick ass musicians. I'm a fan of Jimi Hendrix and also a fan of Andre 3000, so this movie is gonna be great to see. I really hope that this man's story and Andre's performance will meet my expectations if not higher.
Comment by DarkProphet94 on May 8, 2012 at 3:01pm shouldve atleast had some focus on Electric Ladyland, even if it couldve been in the last act
Comment by Absinthe Minded on May 8, 2012 at 2:37pm He would have been a great choice 10 years ago. Now, he's almost 40 and Jimi Hendrix died at the age of 27. Maybe they can bring in the people who did Benjamin Button. Either way, I'd watch the movie because I love Hendrix and I love Andre 3000! Both extremely talented men.
Comment by MuttonChop Cartoons on May 8, 2012 at 2:17pm I can see it, There are few others I'd like to see in the running but its nice to see a musician play a musician for once. Really might be something to see.

Comment by Matthew Carswell on May 8, 2012 at 2:04pm i saw the made for tv movie, it was decent. but i'm pretty sure that they couldn't get the music rights for his stuff for it, or something because i dont remember many hendrix songs actually in it. it was made for tv, and definitely had that feeling. i just hope that everything gets cleared up because i can't imagine a movie about him that doesn't have the songs that still keep him so relevant
