James Cameron is a director so ensconced in film culture that you need only say his name and his legacy is immediately conjured in our collective minds. We think of Terminators, of Aliens, of trips to Pandora and to the bottom of the sea. When it was announced that he'd be doing sequels to 'Avatar,' there were plenty of excited fans. That excitement has been sullied however by remarks Cameron made in a recent interview with the New York Times. Apparently, the legendary director is finished making (in every sense of that word) movies that don't rhyme with Shmavatar. Here's what he said...
"I’ve divided my time over the last 16 years over deep ocean exploration and filmmaking. I’ve made two movies in 16 years, and I’ve done eight expeditions. Last year I basically completely disbanded my production company’s development arm. So I’m not interested in developing anything. I’m in the 'Avatar' business. Period. That’s it. I’m making 'Avatar 2,' 'Avatar 3,' maybe 'Avatar 4,' and I’m not going to produce other people’s movies for them. I’m not interested in taking scripts. And that all sounds I suppose a little bit restricted, but the point is I think within the 'Avatar' landscape I can say everything I need to say that I think needs to be said, in terms of the state of the world and what I think we need to be doing about it. And doing it in an entertaining way."
So yeah, looks like the King of the World has found his definitive kingdom and isn't interested in leaving it ever again. To be fair, he does go on to say that he also still wants to make his documentaries, but apparently in the realm of narrative fiction, there is only 'Avatar' for Jimmy henceforth. I will freely admit that while I was in awe of the spectacle of 'Avatar,' I found its story to be less-than-stellar and its characters pretty one-dimensional. I'm therefore a bit distressed that we won't be getting any more original films from him, in either a director or producer capacity. Moreover, I hardly think 'Avatar' needs two sequels let alone the third at which he hints. Then again, prior to 'Avatar' Cameron hadn't made a narrative film since 'Titanic' in 1997, so it's not as if he was being very prolific prior to this announcement. Yet it's still a shame to conceive that he really is done making anything else. And what about the projects he's rumored to already have in the works? Does this mean no 'Battle Angel' after all?
What do you guys think of Cameron's announcement? Are you excited for the 'Avatar' sequels? Would you prefer to see him work in other universes?

Comment by Joe Cool on May 7, 2012 at 5:16pm Seriously, who cares? "Titanic" sucked and "Avatar" was stellar eye-candy. I'm not denying this guys' a great director, but if he wants to stay stuck on his blue tree-hugging world or underwater forever (not bashing that either, those are great and important causes) that's his call but I think he's just gonna fall into irrelevance. I'd never even HEARD of his previous five "expeditions" and "Avatar" sequel plots are about as predictable as Lindsay Lohan. Maybe he doesn't realize that people love him not because of his passion for preserving the planet but because of the great takes he has on films. This reminds me of George Lucas, another guy who forgot what made him great.
Comment by BLU Year on May 7, 2012 at 4:59pm The supposed message of Avatar is the same simple rhetoric any mislead and uneducated pseudo-environmentalist spews out for a "better" world. It's not a simple topic and it has to be carefully examined just like any other debate. I don't know if the same message for two, possibly three, more movies is going to work. It barely worked in Avatar. Cameron just needs to make the world a much more interesting setting. The culture was 101 alien design and poorly constructed or examined. "Savages" can be just as brutally violent as us, perhaps even more. It just lacked anything that makes Sci-Fi interesting or at the very least, fun.
Comment by Cman5000 on May 7, 2012 at 4:25pm now that's one dedicated man!
Comment by Dr. Detfink on May 7, 2012 at 4:24pm At this point, James Cameron is a brand name. People will pay ANY price to see his movies. Avatar proved that.
I'm sure the visuals and the quality of the CGI eye candy will sell the product. Just wondering, what else can he say about the contrived Avatar story that hasn't been said already?
Comment by BLU Year on May 7, 2012 at 4:14pm Does anyone even care for this announcement?
Comment by The Dubya on May 7, 2012 at 4:04pm Terminator 2 and Aliens. Your arguments are invalid.
Ok ok but for real..at the VERY least he knows how to do sequels and do em well.
That's why I just can't jump on the Avatar hate like everyone else. Sure it was predictable, but predictable =/= BAD. It was well put together, didn't have giant insulting leaps of logic that they expect you to just ignore, and of course that movie was made pretty much specifically to show off the special effects (much like how the first Terminator was. Yeah....Let's stop pretending already, the first one's story was predictable as hell too).
So I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Now that he's got the introductory parts out the way, he can really start delving into this world of his he's clearly passionate and he can really let the creative juices flow.
Comment by ScottPilgrimJDP on May 7, 2012 at 3:54pm I love Titanic, but Avatar was truthfully a polished turd, which you can polish, steal the plot from Dances with Wolves and then paint blue, but you can still polish it.
Oh sweet, more of the bore-fest with blue cats.
Comment by Jerry Lambert on May 7, 2012 at 3:22pm I was looking forward to Battle Angel
Come on, James, move on to other things, that that robo tech movie or whatever!
