If it's crap ... We'll tell you

James Cameron is a director so ensconced in film culture that you need only say his name and his legacy is immediately conjured in our collective minds. We think of Terminators, of Aliens, of trips to Pandora and to the bottom of the sea. When it was announced that he'd be doing sequels to 'Avatar,' there were plenty of excited fans. That excitement has been sullied however by remarks Cameron made in a recent interview with the New York Times. Apparently, the legendary director is finished making (in every sense of that word) movies that don't rhyme with Shmavatar. Here's what he said...
"I’ve divided my time over the last 16 years over deep ocean exploration and filmmaking. I’ve made two movies in 16 years, and I’ve done eight expeditions. Last year I basically completely disbanded my production company’s development arm. So I’m not interested in developing anything. I’m in the 'Avatar' business. Period. That’s it. I’m making 'Avatar 2,' 'Avatar 3,' maybe 'Avatar 4,' and I’m not going to produce other people’s movies for them. I’m not interested in taking scripts. And that all sounds I suppose a little bit restricted, but the point is I think within the 'Avatar' landscape I can say everything I need to say that I think needs to be said, in terms of the state of the world and what I think we need to be doing about it. And doing it in an entertaining way."
So yeah, looks like the King of the World has found his definitive kingdom and isn't interested in leaving it ever again. To be fair, he does go on to say that he also still wants to make his documentaries, but apparently in the realm of narrative fiction, there is only 'Avatar' for Jimmy henceforth. I will freely admit that while I was in awe of the spectacle of 'Avatar,' I found its story to be less-than-stellar and its characters pretty one-dimensional. I'm therefore a bit distressed that we won't be getting any more original films from him, in either a director or producer capacity. Moreover, I hardly think 'Avatar' needs two sequels let alone the third at which he hints. Then again, prior to 'Avatar' Cameron hadn't made a narrative film since 'Titanic' in 1997, so it's not as if he was being very prolific prior to this announcement. Yet it's still a shame to conceive that he really is done making anything else. And what about the projects he's rumored to already have in the works? Does this mean no 'Battle Angel' after all?
What do you guys think of Cameron's announcement? Are you excited for the 'Avatar' sequels? Would you prefer to see him work in other universes?

Comment by David Riddell on May 9, 2012 at 3:14pm I wonder what will happen to Battle Angel.
If I had read this BEFORE Avatar had been released, I might be excited. But having seen Avatar and just "meh"ing it, this is kind of disappointing to me.
Comment by Gift of the Magi on May 8, 2012 at 6:47pm @Maxwell: They have already re-released Avatar once and Titanic three times now. My guess is they'll do them and a few others about 2-4 more times in the next 20 years.
Comment by The Ultimate "Psych" Fan on May 8, 2012 at 12:11pm We get three sequels to a CGI retelling of the Pocahontas story, but no good ending to the Terminator franchise?!
WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK?!
Comment by Zgamer on May 8, 2012 at 11:26am I am not sure why he has such a love affair with Avatar. I mean, it was technically well made, but I do not think any of the characters were really worth following more than one film (or even half a movie). I think it is just mostly a money thing, but then again he could have said that when Titanic became a billion dollar movie. I just would like to see him do something more diverse since we do not get many films from him in the first place.
Consider this also, what if Avatar 2 is not as good as Avatar? It will surely make money, but maybe some people will not be so enthusiastic for further Avatar films. Will he hold to his statement then?
Comment by ChristianDB on May 8, 2012 at 10:07am I can see where the guy is coming from, at the pace he works with as well, two or 3 movies is probably right before he finally croaks. He's a billionaire, he can do whatever he wants and if it's going to the awesome ocean and showing us that alien world then good for him.
Sucks that he won't be producing though, I guess he isn't in the buisness of losing money. I just wonder if that means he won't be selling his technology either. avatar technology is pretty amazing
Comment by Matthew Fifer on May 8, 2012 at 8:14am Shame....I was looking forward to a possible Prometheus 2 from him (only hoping, never confirmed or anything)....I mean, that guy can really make sequels. Aliens and Terminator 2 (I know he also did T1)....nuff said. Anyway, Avatar sucked so if he wants to try and make more of them so the name is less synonymous with suck, by all means...but I won't be too excited to see them. It was pretty, but that was all it had going for it. That and the great story of the woman in the theater who was watching it in 3D who caused a panic when one of the ember's at the end of the film from the burning tree landed on her pants and she thought she was on fire....yep, that actually happened!

So he is planning on making environmental movies that he hopes to entertain people by shoving his opinion on how the earth should be managed through some fictional world that took concepts and ideas from other movies? I lost interest in anything james cameron did after true lies, titanic was one of the few movies i have seen that made me fall asleep due to how non-entertaining it was, and avatar was visually appealing but had nothing else going for it.
It's too bad the old James Cameron is no longer making movies worth watching but instead is focusing on being the loudest environmentalist in the room telling us how we need to live in order to fix the world, usually the loudest are the one's contributing the most to the problem at hand, kinda of like Al Gore "inconvenient truth" asking people to help cut back on electricity when his average monthly bill ran higher than the normal persons.

Comment by Luke Hero on May 8, 2012 at 2:22am Does Avatar even need a sequel? I mean it looked beautiful to look at, but not much of a story
