Malcolm Lee Hired To Direct 'Scary Movie 5'
Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the theater, well frankly you were just being naive. People still talk and text during the movie and Hollywood still makes some ol' garbage. Hey, speaking of, long ago and far away, it was announced that we were on track to get a fifth installment of the 'Scary Movie' franchise, around about the same time that 'Scream 4' was due out. However, the project had remained dormant long enough as to allow the glimmer of hope that maybe this was just in fact a rumor. And then a few days ago they went and hired Malcolm Lee ('Undercover Brother') to direct it, so it seems this really is happening. In addition to helming the film, Lee will co-write 'Scary Movie 5' with David Zucker (who directed 'Scary Movie 3' and 'Scary Movie 4'). Few details are known about the plot, nor when shooting is scheduled to begin.
If it's not evident already, I am not a big fan of the 'Scary Movie' franchise. To be completely fair, there were a few jokes in the first movie that had me giggling, but that was back when it was, you know, actually making fun of horror movies. As the series progressed, it just became this amorphous dumping ground for all current movies and pop culture references and whatever other desperate attempts at remaining relevant they could find. However, I am fully aware that we would not even be talking about 'Scary Movie 5' if there wasn't still an audience. I've never actually seen a single film in Malcolm Lee's catalog, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, which fits because I have nothing but doubt about this project. I'm going to hope against hope that there will be at least as many found-footage jokes as there are 'Jersey Shore' and 'The Voice' mocks.
Am I being too harsh? Are there any die hard 'Scary Movie' fans out there who could see this working? Is Malcolm Lee a good choice to direct?

Seltzer and Friedberg aren't in command of this one. This might not end terribly if those fuckfaces have no say in the project.

Yeah, you are being too harsh. If I remember correctly, (because I haven't seen any of these movies in a long time) the Scary Movie films (for the most part, I think) parody horror movies. They're no Friedberg and Seltzer, so you won't see any 'Jersey Shore' or 'The Vow' references. But you bring up a good point: Found footage could be the way to go (but I think that'll lead to countless slapstick with the camera man walking into trees or something).

Well I for one enjoyed all four of the scary movies, can safely say I'm looking forward to the fifth one...as long as it has Anna Farris in it.
