Well, now that 2010 is over and everyone else is doing it, what better time to give my take on the absolute worst films of 2010. For starters, this will not be a strictly numbered list- rather, it will look into a variety of genres and categories before ultimately reaching the #1 pick. That said, here are the results, starting with...

Well, another year is reaching its end, and I think now marks a good opportunity to reflect on the great bounty that the cinematic realm has brought us, the viewers who keep the medium alive. Now, as I am not a professional critic (though I may some day be- let's see how the rest of University plays out), it would be highly pompous and egotistical for me to call my top 10 the end-all, be-all of top 10 lists this year. Heck, there are still several films this year that I still wish to see,…

Well, now that we're right in the middle of December, I figured it'd be as good a time as any to take a shot at what I think will get nominated in the major categories at this year's Academy Awards. Yep, I'm not resorting to any B.S. exposition, I'm just going to jump right into it and tell you what's going for the trophies this year. Heck, I'll even give a stab at what I think might take it when the night finally rolls. Let's get down to it.…

So yeah, in case you didn't pick up the sad news,
Vampires Suck, the latest "movie" from con artists Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, placed #2 at the box office this weekend, making an estimated $12.2 million over the weekend, and a head-shaking $18.5 million since its launch on Wednesday (when it placed #1). Against its $20 million production budget, that means it'll become profitable by the end of the week, and it will also likely surpass the…

It has an astounding 98% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (147 fresh to 3 rotten reviews, with an average rating of 7.8/10 and 93% among Top Critics). After an opening weekend that fell below industry expectations, it became an enormous hit thanks to rapturous word-of-mouth, cementing itself as one of 2010's highest grossing films. The original score for the film has earned unanimous praise across the net (look it up and listen for yourself). The 3D experience is perhaps the most praised since…

Ah, summer- what's not to love? The warm weather, the freedom from responsibilities (if you're young, anyway...), and the family togetherness, and above all, the summer blockbusters. Yes, the season where Hollywood pulls out their best (or at least most expensive) movies begins next month, and I'd like to hear what YOUR most anticipated for this summer movie season is (to clarify, no, I do NOT work for an advertising agency, and none of this information will be used against you in a court of…

For years now, DreamWorks Animation has remained the biggest, most prominent and most profitable competitor to the modern market's animation juggernaut, Pixar. Whereas Pixar has made consistent hits time and time again, they never play it safe, never pander to their audience, and are more than willing to take risks on projects that wouldn't be seen as very "commercially viable" (master chef rodents, trash-compacting robots, South American adventures with seniors, etc.). DreamWorks, at least at…

Back by popular demand, I bring you an analysis of this summer's biggest offerings, to determine which film will rule the Summer Movie Season! Barring the possibility of another Avatar coming our way (seriously, I doubt we're going to see another $700 million + grosser anytime soon), the winner of the Summer Crown will likely be the highest grossing film of the year (we all be thankful, however,… Continue

Now that the Oscar race has begun and I have gotten around to seeing more films from last year, I've decided to update my Top 10 for the year. Considering how many lists of this kind that you've probably read (or at least briefly skimmed through), I have decided not to waste anyone's time with some nostalgic reflection or superfluous introduction. I give you my list for the Top 10 films of 2009.
#10: Moon (Directed by Duncan Jones)
This little-seen indie deserved…

Well, it's Oscar time again, which means it's also time for us to (dis)honor the
worst that 2009 had to offer! Now, I know the final nominations list is tomorrow (February 1, traditionally the day before the Oscar nods are announced), but I just have to pass judgment on the picks of those old stogies at the Golden Raspberries! The Razzies already announced their pre-nominees lists for this year a few weeks back, so looking at that I'll give my guesses for which turds will make the final…

As of this writing, the Golden Globes have come and gone, and the final announcement on Oscar nominations is just 2 weeks or so away. I've already been posting occasional updates on what I think will make the 10 slots for Best Picture, but now along with that I'll also give my predictions for other major categories. While a few nods are givens by this point, there's still a fair share of possibilities that aren't solid, and anything can still be possible...

Well, we're here, at the end of a year (and a decade, no less). And when a year reaches its end, we traditionally look back upon it. For what would we be as human beings without looking behind on our triumphs, our mistakes, our opportunities, both taken and missed?
*cough* Sorry, better cut to the chase now before I waste anyone's time with incoherent rambling. Anyway, this year was a great one for movies, both critically and financially (Hollywood's biggest ever, in fact). And like…

I thought I'd give an update on my current list of Best Picture nominee predictions, seeing as I now have two vacant spots. Let's see the last list:

Inglorious Basterds (Weinstein Company)
Invictus (Warner Bros.)
Nine (Weinstein Company)
Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire (Lionsgate)

Welcome back, Spill readers! The race for Oscar 2009 is starting to get pretty heated, and with that will have to come (several) changes to my list of Best Picture predictions. Here's my old list:
An Education (Sony Pictures Classics)
District 9 (Tristar)
Inglorious Basterds (Weinstein Company)
Invictus (Warner Bros.)
Nine (Weinstein Company)
The Hurt Locker (Equinoxe Films)

Okay, this franchise has gone too far.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon opened yesterday to a first day total of...
God damn it, I just can't say it. It's too painful.
Fine- $72.7 million.
No, that wasn't some sort of typo.
$72.7 million. In one day.
This ranks as the
biggest opening day gross of all time. That's right, R. Pat absolutely crushed
The Dark Knight's opening day gross of $67.2 million with his…

Welcome back! Well, seeing as the Fall movie season (September-October) is pretty much out of the way, it's time to look at a far bigger, greater, more interesting moviegoing period... the HOLIDAY SEASON!! Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Years, oh my! This is an apt description of both my thought process (any holiday to escape the working world) and the major studios, who save some of their higher-profile, big-budget pictures and the vast majority of their major awards contenders for this…

Hello once again! Are you a movie buff (like me) who'd see just about anything that catches your eye (like me) but you're too strapped for cash to see everything (also like me)? Well you're in luck, because the Sound of Doom (or SoD- on second though, use the long version) is going to review the weeks ahead, so you'll know the prime time to get into the ticket line (rhyming!).
Now before we begin, I'll lay down how the system works: as you should know, every Friday sees a batch of…

I hope I'm hallucinating, because this is just getting f***ing ridiculous.
This has yet to be confirmed on any major news websites, but if
Box Office Mojo is to be believed, then Paramount isn't even trying to compete for Oscar 2009. As I checked the post of recent release schedule changes (which also lists
The Road's move from October to November 25 and
Up in the Air's November 13 limited launch- before it expands on November 25 as well), I was shocked to…

Alright, there's been some patience on your part. I've decided to reveal my predictions for...
Wait, what's this?
Apparently the academy has just changed their voting rules for Best Picture (again, you ask? Well... yeah, again). You know how people in the Academy just peeled off a stick-it note and wrote their top choice in before slipping it in the ballot box? Well, with 10 nominees comes a big change to this voting system.
Now Academy voters will have to… Continue

If you're just joining right now, then Scorsese's
Shutter Island has been moved out of the Oscar 2009 race to February 2010, leaving a huge gap in the already large field of 10 nomination slots for Best Picture this year (after an extension from the usual 5). Part 1 covered the potential nominees from earlier this year (believe it or not, there were more than you'd expect), and now we will delve into the world of the not-too-distant-yet-still-uncertain future, examining the potential…
