Santa Claus Review

Santa Claus (1959), from Mexico, 94 minutes

Starring José Elías Moreno, José Luis Aguirre, Armando Arriol

Why am I watching a Christmas movie in May?  Well, why aren't you?

Santa lives in outer space and fights the devil Pitch to save Christmas.  At Santa’s disposal is a snowy sweat shop full of tone deaf kids, wind up…

Why James Van Elswyk likes classic Monster Movies

I got hooked on Monster films after watching the 1931 frankenstein... Not the first Frankenstein film, but the first full-on Hollywood treatment of Mary Shelley's classic book. Brilliantly directed by James Whale, Frankenstein is in fact the name of the mad scientist and monster-maker. Then unknown, Boris Karloff plays the nameless monster, who manages to evoke sympathy from the audience despite his grotesque form, hideous face and shocking violence.

After that James Van Elswyk was…

Creepshow 2 Review

Rating-Matinee'   Creepshow 2 follows the unfortunate pattern of a lot of horror movie sequels, which is that it is good in it's own right, but when compared to the original it's fucked. Creepshow 2 contains good stories, nice haunting visuals, classic dark themes, well written dialogue, and (Mostly) good acting. However, the films biggest downfall is that it's stories aren't as unique as those told in the…

First Footage From 'The Host 2'

I love Bong Joon-ho's 'The Host.' I found it to be an incredibly affecting monster movie. The opening rampage through that riverside community in Korea was, by itself, worth the price of admission. When I heard a sequel was in the works, I was (cautiously) excited. The first footage for 'The Host 2'has just landed…

The Grey Review

No other film has had such an appropriate title in quite a while and not just in terms of the actual story itself but of the story behind the story in this particular case. Sure, the film is heavy in terms of its philosophical ideas and the dire situations that it pits against its main characters but it also delivers on the visceral aspect of a slow-burning roller coaster through the Alaskan wilderness as a pack of wolves track down the remaining survivors of a plane crash one by one. While…

My First Early Screening Experience

This last year I was invited to an early screening of Gentlemen Broncos. Now, before you say anything, realize that it was before I found out what a piece of garbage that movie turned out to be. Anyway, on the day of the screening, me and my friends (who were also invited), hopped into our respective cars and drove down to the theater that was screening it, roughly half an hour away. Twenty five minutes later my phone rings, it was one of my friends who decided to go early. He… Continue

Here be Monsters

I finally got around to seeing the original Gojira, or Godzilla and I realize why it's become such an amazing pop culture icon. Not just because of the amazing monster, or the revolutionary effects, but because of how it was portrayed. The coolest monster in the worst movie could make it completely useless. But when you put a badass like Godzilla in a movie that heavy, it just works. So, out of my own… Continue

B-Movie Canadian Gem (potentially, maybe) and the Wtf, wait...this movie is actually awesome Justin Long movie experience extraordinaire.

b>Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer

This movie is the shit and at the same time is absolute shit...

The story has something to do with a kid with anger managment issues and monsters who appear out of nowhere when some scientist (Robert Englund) eats a fat turd looking heart. This heart apparently belonged to some chupacabra looking monster which was buried in a box directly clogging the pipes to said scientists shitter. The… Continue

The Case DEFENDING Godzilla '98... let the flaming begin...

Okay, please put down your guns... knives too... okay then... Some of you may ask: Why would he DEFEND this turd? Well, I'll tell you why; I love it. Not joking. Love it. I grew up with this movie. I could NEVER hate it. No matter how hard I try. I don't think this movie's as bad as everyone says, and I'm gonna tell you why.

Reason 1.

Argument against: Godzilla looks nothing like Godzilla.

Rebuttal: Oh, I'm sorry, would you prefer… Continue

Cloverfield Blu-Ray Review

All of us remember that mysterious trailer before the film Transformers at the theatre. A few people chilling out partying, then all of a sudden disaster strikes them. The thing that brought our attention was the sight of the Statue of Liberty's head thrown in the middle of the street with people screaming. The trailer ended with the film's release date. No title, no plot given out, nothing.

When the film came out this January,… Continue

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002) and Tokyo S.O.S REVIEW

Over the weekend I saw these 2 Godzilla flicks (I'm a big fan!) So I thought I would share my experience with you spillios out there who bothered to read this. (THANK YOU)

Okay first up, Godzilla against Mechagodzilla!

The movie starts out with Big G attacking Tokyo I guess (I'm not sure,) So some giant monster fighting team is sent out to fight him. (With, yeah know, stuff that doesn't work.) Where we are introduced to our main… Continue

Hellboy VS. Hancock..oh, and a short blurb on pan's labryinth

Soooo.... I saw Hellboy 2 about 2 weeks ago, and just FINALLY finished watching Hellboy 1. So, how odd was it that some crazy ass fbi agents found a little red demon baby with an unusually large rock hand off the coast of BFE? Hmmm....and how convenient is it that his girlfriend is Firestarter of the 21st century with a posh spice haircut? Well, at least he has nice muscles to keep her interest. I guess love truly is blind, because I couldn't look at his face for very long, but, hey, I live in… Continue
