365 Classic Films: Day 18 - Grave of the Fireflies

If any of you have ever seen a sports movie, a romantic comedy, or anything that uses the term “uplifting” from a critic’s review in its trailer, then the “pick-me-up scene” should not be a foreign concept in the least.  Let me paint the picture for you: a negative turn of events has the main character slouching and sulking in his home, often in his underwear, lamenting how things turned out.  Then his sidekick/best friend/token comedy relief comes through the door to check in,…See More

365 Classic Films: Day 17 - The Neverending Story (1984)

When talking with Greg about why he gave Sucker Punch 4 “hombres” out of 5 on our site, he commented that it was “everything Transformers wanted to be”. Zach Snyder would probably embrace a million backhanded comments like those at this point, for most critics have been very aggressive in their condemnations of his latest film. We have known ever since Gerard Butler’s CGI-enhanced washboards that Snyder was a man who favored noteworthy style over substance, but films like 300 and Watchmen were…See More

365 Classic Films: Day 16 - Grizzly Man (2005)

This is easily the most difficult review for a film I have done in over three years of doing them, and not just because of recent personal matters that delayed an output of analyses of classic films – which I do sincerely apologize for, by the way, so feel free to imagine me pelted with pseudo-butter sauce from your cinema’s popcorn machine, if it helps.  The bigger reason that this took so long is the subject matter of this documentary, and the personal empathy that I found…See More

365 Classic Films: Day 15 - Love Actually

This was a hard one for me to finish, in both getting around to watching the film and in finding the right words to say about it. None of this should be seen as a condemnation of the film itself. In all honesty, as maybe indicated by my review of Rudy, the concept of…well, exposure to that unique heartfelt connection is something that has been both a major desire and a cinematic fascination for me. I got romance out of a flipping Fighting Irish football tale, for Pete’s sake! So anyway, seeing…See More

About Me:
Hey there, fellow Spillers. As a fellow movie critic for my region for about 3 years now, I can definitely say that I have felt the highest hopes and the deepest shit in the movie theatres. But sorting the good from the bad in cinema has become a passion of mine, one that I want to share with you all...Beside this, I avidly follow sports (especially NFL, NBA, and MLB), work on my own stories, and work with my college's football team when time permits.

But I guess this site is about the movies...so if you are interested in chatting, whether it is about the crummy past choices of the Oscars, or in my theory on how No Country for Old Men's ending is perfectly legitimate (sorry, Carlyle), feel free to drop me a line. Hope to hear from you soon, love and peace to you all!!! (expect to Freidberg and Seltzer, who deserve NO MERCY!)
All Time Favorite Movies:
It's A Wonderful Life, The Truman Show, Rocky, WALL-E, Pan's Labyrinth, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Star Wars:Episode IV, My Own Private Idaho, [REC], Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Hard Candy, The Blair Witch Project (guilty pleasure)
All Time Worst Movies:
Ang Lee's Hulk, Swing Vote, Meet the Spartans (or anything by Friedberg and Seltzer), Prom Night
Favorite Actors or Actresses:
(male) Tom Hanks, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Daniel Craig, Ed Harris, James Stewart, Josh Brolin, Ryan Reynolds

(female) Laura Linney, Diane Lane, Donna Reed, Audrey Hepburn, Kate Winslet, Ellen Page, Anne Hathaway (cute AND talented!)
Favorite Directors:
Stanley Kubrick, Peter Weir, Tim Burton, Steven Speilberg (besides his remakes)

"365 Classic Films..." Day 14: Rudy

Clearly, my efforts in this project are becoming as rambling and off-road as a Hunter S. Thompson novel (as a friend of mine put it).  To apologize for delays again would surely seem redundant at this point.  All I can say, in…

No I don't really follow a specific list of films. Before I go to the cinema I watch a couple of the directors previous films or anything somewhat related to the movie (e.g. the original if its a remake...). I also printed this picture and put it up on my wall and ticked the films I saw:
