Well, Depp is good. Ed Wood is my favorite role of his. I have yet to stay awake during Pirates I. I was surprised at how much I liked Alice, he was great in that, make up and all.
Dark Shadows.....is.....special!!! Dan Curtis was the producer and I swear he must have been related to Irwin Allen...one take, that's it! You flubb a line, we just keep on rolling! That was part of the charm of the show, doors slaming and the walls wobble! Doors don't work, actor adlibs!
My fear is Burton will slick it up too much but I'm trying to keep an open mind...for now, but don't say I didnt' warn you.
I just realized I never actually sold you on the character, which is a major part of what you asked me so allow me to quickly address that. What makes The Flash cool (aside from a ridiculously interesting power set with a fascinating set of rules that get explained in the Waid & Johns runs) is just how human & grounded (pun only slightly intended) he is. This might not make a lot of sense to you, but if I was to say which of the "Big Seven" seemed like just "a guy" it would be The Flash. & this goes for the entire Flash family, despite crazy super sci-fi stuff happening all the time around them they never fall into that "godlike" thing that DC does with almost everyone else in the "Big Seven." One other thing to quickly note is just how clever all the Flashes are, the book has always relished in coming up with new & interesting ways for Flash to use his powers. Very rarely does a Flash story devolve into "go & punch the bad guy", often Flash is forced to think on his feet (pun oh so intended) to come up with creative solutions to his problems.
I suppose it is a matter of what you wish to be sold on, The Flash as a title or the various characters who have had the mantle over the years. So much of what Ol' Flasher (as Mirror Master likes to call him) is in today's world has been set down by two authors, Mark Waid & Geoff Johns. I say pick up anything with them writing Wally West is worth your time except when Waid relaunched the book a few years ago with Wally & his kids acting as a super team (it didn't work, & it was the last thing out before Geoff brought back Barry). Waid was only on the book for a few issues anyway so don't bother tracking those issues down. I'd also say go ahead & skip Rebirth & everything since then with Barry (it has been a bit of a mess) & just dive in after the relaunch & see what you think. I'd say maybe Flashpoint, but I think that will be too confusing for a reader just coming in; better to wait for the new series to see if Barry is your thing. As to Classic Barry stuff I'd say the stuff that probably would interest you the most is the issues leading right up to & including Crisis On Infinite Earths where Barry goes & bites the big bazooka (one of the most pivotal moments in all comics & one that I'm ashamed to admit I have never read)! You can also go WAY back & read some Jay Garrick stuff (the first Flash) but you probably get more out of the character reading the aforementioned Waid & Johns runs or the soon to be wrapping up JSA series. One thing to avoid at all costs is Bart Allen's brief tenure as The Flash! I love Bart (he is my second favorite after Wally) & that series takes a huge shit on the character & the title of Flash! DO NOT READ IT, IT SUCKS ON ICE!
I hope that you can find at least a tiny shred of useful information in that long rambling mess. Let me know where you end up starting!
