Okay here's a rundown of the new Avatar Series (Yes, It's been confirmed.)
"Avatar: The Legend of Korra" has been signed to Nickelodeon for 12 episodes. People all across the interwebz are angry because it sounds like a mini-series and not a full trilogy, but they forget that A:TLA was only originally signed for the first 12 episodes, and then purchased in its entirety after the ratings went through the roof. Either way, its all speculation as to the final length of the series.
The Facts:
Korra is set 70 years after the events of Aang's journey. Aang and Katara's son, Tenzin is [presumably] the last Airbender yet again. Korra, the next incarnation of the Avatar after Aang is a waterbender from the southern water tribe, and when the story picks up she has already mastered every element but Air. Yes, Aang and most if not all the rest of the original cast is deceased.
Being set 70 years in the future, the entire Avatar planet has technologically advanced to entirely steampunk. Rather than a sort of medieval Chinese theme they went steampunk Chinese. The entire series takes place within a metropolis named [blandly enough] Republic City.
Korra's adventures as far as we know are entirely in Republic City, running around fighting anti-bender revolts and trying to master Air from Tenzin. Aang will be the 'Roku' figure to Korra.
Here's a bunch of links where all of this information is, along with the only image of Korra concept art that has been released-
