Seeing as the most iconic superhero origin story blew up in their faces with Men of Steal, I could see them not wanting to get anywhere close to Wonder Woman. Ironically, a Wonder Woman franchise could be the game changer they so desperately need.
Warner Bros. is narrow minded in their thinking in terms of what the next big movie should be. "Let's combine our two biggest hitters into one big hitter, that will win us the market!" Getting the boys to fight is kids dream but getting Wonder Woman to shine is everyone's hope.
From a humanitarian perspective it just makes sense to aim for Wonder Woman, the world needs the promotion of a strong female character now more than ever. From a marketing perspective, the one untapped market in these movies is females. Thinking on it Marvel hasn't made any successful solo female debuts and it is almost impractical on their part, as most of their major female superhero females are too closely tied to males. There is no room for them to fly one their own.
Wonder Woman on the other hand is her own woman. She is not part of anyone's story or even needs to have any interaction with any other major characters in her movie. As for complicated as her background story is, it can be done, looking at how they were able to pull off Thor, it isn't outside of the realm of possibilities. Aided by the fact that she could do what Man of Steal couldn't. She is able to be a symbol for something greater. Women's rights, Independent of the politics/views of others and out to do what is right. Rather than what someone told her she should be.
She really is the best one out of anyone, to make a movie be a success.
Well the jury is out on Guardians of the Galaxy but keep in mind, Rocket Raccoon is not starring in his own movie. He's comedy relief in this era. Please note no one at SDCC questions Marvel's reluctance for a minority or female driven movie. Wonder Woman has been a firestorm of race, look (pants or shorts), and just about every thing is scrutinized. Kind of find it funny that most people seem to forget it was a Puerto Rican New Yorker by the name of George Pérez "the great" that brought the Greek mythology back into the mythos of Wonder Woman not Dan Didio. ;)
Haha. brilliant :-)
