Hey Austinites and Previous Goers of SpillDotCon,

I'm going to be flying into Austin most likely around June 14th. I really want to take some time to soak in the city while having fun with the Spilldos, and this includes going to the Pinballz and Austin Karaoke Pre-Parties.

Now, I really appreciate what Nate's done listing out various areas to eat, chill, and go to for Spill Events on a map, but I didn't take into consideration how far everything is separated. Even flying to Austin through the Airport, the Airport is a good 10 miles away from the general SpillDotCon area, and I'll be expected to pay a pretty penny to get a taxi. But what about simply going from venue to venue? Even Pinballs and Austin Karaoke are about 2 miles apart and both of those are REALLY far away from the 6th Street Area and Alamo Drafthouse. It feels like if I were only to only take Taxis, that'd take away so much money.

So my question is, will I need to potentially get a rent-a-car? How does everyone else generally travel around Austin? Do you guys get rides from other Spilldos, take the Metro or Buses? Or is walking not so bad? Granted, I'm a little concerned because I'm overweight and getting around would delay some of the activities, but I'm really curious over what's the best way to get around and/or the cheapest.

Thanks, really appreciated.

I rode the buses around a lot last year. They get you relatively close to the locations (with a little walking as well), and it's pretty cheap for a day pass.

And in cases where I wasn't too sure where I was going, I usually stumbled upon spillios pretty regularly who would be heading to the same location. Some fellow spillos even have no problem offering a ride to others.

Just make sure you know where you need to go and how long it takes to get there, and you'll be fine.

From doing a little Google mapping of my own, it looks like Austin has a relatively sane transit system, so if need be, taking a bus from the general hotel area to 6th street or vice versa doesn't seem that hard. OTOH, that may be five years of riding the bus in Seattle conditioning me. :)

The buses are pretty good

It can quickly get $$$ if you're cabbing it everywhere. Most of the events will take place at the Marchesa but for everything else you should hook up with other Spillios.

Of course, renting a car gives you freedom to roam the city at your leisure.  You might also look into this: http://www.smartusa.com/home/overview.aspx

From the Airport
From the airport you can get a ride to the main area where the Spill events take place for about $20 in a taxi. The taxi drivers are all pretty cool and dont look to rip you off here. You can also take the city bus from the airport and it will take you downtown. Might take the capmetro bus Airport bus as well which goes to two different locations, takes only a little longer than the cab and costs only $1: http://www.capmetro.org/riding/airport.asp

Getting around Austin
So, most events will be around the Marchesa Hall and downtown by 6th street, I believe. Although a few will also be a bit north (Pinballz, and Austin Karaoke). You can usually take the city bus to get to most events (again, http://www.capmetro.org) or you can get a taxi. Renting a car might not be a bad decision, but then you will have to deal with traffic and parking and navigating which can be a whole other hassle. If you can join up with a few other Spillios comin in then getting a car amongst y'all could be cool. Stayin in the same hotel as others means you can travel on the bus together as well. I would recommend stayin by the Marchesa if you plan to mainly do the spill events since it has plenty of hotels nearby which are cheaper. If you wanna party around 6th street more then I guess you would wanna stay somewhere downtown.

When in doubt about how to get from event to event just ask one of the spill dudes or other locals attending the event and I am sure they will be willing to help.

Thanks for posting that Grant, its gonna come in handy for sure!

SORRY. What I meant to link you to was Car2Go.

I am new to Austin, been here about a month, but I would be more than happy to help some Spillios get around. I should know the area pretty well by the time Spill Dot Con gets here.

Props to Everyone in this thread, BIG TIME for giving me ideas of how to plan things out. I really enjoy how the Austin Metro has it's own Day-Planner for when I want to go to certain areas. I think now the best thing to wait for is when The Spill Crew plans out it's events for the weekend. I'm really pumped to go to food places around here like the infamous "Whip-In" and Gordoughs. Maybe grab some nice BBQ if I'm lucky. (If any Spilldos want to gather for these objectives, all for it!)

The shuttle bus is another option from the airport to your accommodation. It is $13 and will bring you almost anywhere. Great for long distance flights when you just want too sleep.

I am also flying in to Austin. If you want we can split the cab fare or the price for a rental car. Message me.

Since we've established the two main areas of SpillDotCon being around The Marchesa Hall and Club De Ville, what's the best way to go between them back and forth? They are 5 miles apart, so will there be any buses in route between the areas?
